Chapter 6 - The Fall of House Vance

Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick certified volumes of federal indictments onto the center of the table with a concussive thud that rattled the remaining glassware.

"Under emergency judicial warrants executed by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at dawn," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the silent hall like a tempered broadsword, "Victor Vance, Julian Vance, and twelve executive associates are under active federal indictment for Premeditated Attempted Murder, Interstate Racketeering under the RICO Act, Extortion, and the 2021 Assassination of Don Vittorio Blackwood in Milan."

Frank connected his tablet to the library’s seventy-foot digital display wall.

The massive screens illuminated instantly in crystalline four-K clarity:

First came the decrypted bank wire records from Zurich showing Julian Vance transferring five million dollars to the mercenary bomb-makers who rigged the vehicle in Milan; next came the ballistic telemetry from the Taconic Parkway ambush forty minutes earlier; and finally, the certified clinical audio and holographic imaging from St. Jude’s Clinic, displaying the three distinct heartbeats of House Blackwood.

The library erupted into deafening, chaotic fury.

Senior caporegimes shoved their chairs back in open revulsion, shouting curses at Victor Vance, stepping away from the conspirators as if they were carrying a lethal contagion.

Old Salvatore Moretti, the senior-most council member who had served Adrian’s father for forty years, slammed his fist onto the table, his face red with rage. "You tried to slaughter three unborn babies in an exam room, Victor? You brought shame upon our fathers' names for container berths?"

Julian Vance panicked. He reached for the inside of his suit jacket, but Marcus moved with blinding, apex predator speed.

Marcus’s iron grip clamped around Julian’s wrist, twisting the joint with brutal mechanical leverage that forced Julian onto his knees on the carpeted riser with a sickening crack.

Julian screamed, clutching his broken wrist, hyperventilating as his expensive aristocratic facade completely dissolved into dust.

"Adrian... please!" Victor Vance wept, falling to his knees beside his son, his hands coming up in a desperate, frantic plea. "We built this waterfront together! Your father was going to merge our fleets anyway! I did it for the survival of the syndicate! I’ll sign over every berth in Jersey! Cash! Equity! Anything you want!"

Adrian walked slowly down the length of the table, stopping twelve inches from where his father's murderers knelt in pathetic ruin.

He did not draw a weapon. He did not strike them with his fist.

Adrian reached down, picked up the unsigned receivership contract from the table, and tore the thick parchment cleanly in half.

He let the shredded white paper flutter down onto the floorboards at Victor's knees.

"You didn't do it for the syndicate, Victor," Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal, absolute finality. "You did it because you are a coward who murdered my family in Milan and tried to hunt an innocent woman through a clinic to steal shipping lanes. Your name is erased from this city forever."

Special Agent Raymond Callahan stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Victor and Julian Vance’s wrists and ankles.

As the armed federal marshals dragged the screaming, sobbing traitors down the center aisle of the library, Adrian turned his back on the room forever.

He walked to my side, took both of my hands into his, and lifted my knuckles to his lips in front of the entire assembled leadership of the Atlantic maritime industry.

"Capos of House Blackwood," Adrian commanded, his voice ringing with undisputed sovereignty. "Bow to your Donna."

Every single man in that room dropped to one knee on the hardwood floor, lowering their heads in unanimous, profound reverence.
