Chapter 6 - The Council of Iron

At eight o'clock the following morning, the grand council chamber of the DeMarco Maritime Consortium in Lower Manhattan was assembled in emergency plenary session.
The thirty-seat oak boardroom was surrounded by private security operatives in dark suits. The five regional captains who commanded the cargo hubs, container terminals, and logistics routes from Boston to Philadelphia sat in absolute silence around the perimeter of the table.
Cesario DeMarco sat at the head of the table, commanding the room with the sheer, unassailable gravity of his presence.
At the opposite end of the table, flanked by two armed guards, sat Harold Vance. The sixty-five-year-old shipping broker was drenched in sweat, his expensive pinstripe suit rumpled, his hands shaking violently as he stared at the mountain of forensic financial audits stacked before him.
Beside him sat Vanessa, her designer dress stained from a night spent in the estate’s holding quarters, her aristocratic composure completely eradicated.
Cesario did not raise his voice. He tapped the mahogany table once with his heavy gold signet ring.
"Harold," Cesario began, his voice cutting through the room like a cold winter draft. "Thirty-four million dollars. Diverted from our dockworkers' pension reserve into your private brokerage accounts in Zurich."
Harold Vance swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. "Cesario... listen to me. It was a bridge loan! Julian agreed to the terms! We were going to recapitalize the fund after the second-quarter shipping dividends cleared!"
"Julian had no authority to trade the bread of thirty thousand longshoremen to cover your gambling debts, Harold," Cesario replied coldly.
Cesario turned to the five regional captains sitting along the table.
"Captain Moretti. Captain Falcone. Captain Russo."
The three veteran commanders nodded in unison, their expressions hard as granite.
"As of six o'clock this morning," Cesario announced to the entire council, "the DeMarco Maritime Syndicate has executed a complete, hostile foreclosure on all maritime assets, warehouse leases, and container berths held by Vance Logistics across the eastern seaboard."
Vanessa jumped to her feet, her hands slamming against the table. "You can't do that! My family has operated in Newark for three generations! You are stealing our legacy!"
Cesario slowly turned his gaze upon her.
"Your legacy was built on theft, Vanessa," Cesario said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying finality. "You stole from my daughter’s trust. You manipulated my son. And you struck my granddaughter in my own home."
He gestured to the double mahogany doors at the back of the chamber.
The doors opened.
Special Agent Marcus Reed of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by four armed federal marshals, stepped into the council room with arrest warrants in hand.
"Harold Vance, Vanessa Vance," Agent Reed announced. "You are under arrest for Federal Wire Fraud, Interstate Securities Conspiracy, Grand Larceny of Maritime Trust Assets, and Child Endangerment."
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Vanessa’s wrists, she glared at Cesario with venomous, desperate hatred, screaming as she was dragged toward the corridor: "You think you've won, you old monster? Your son is a coward! Your empire has no heir!"

Cesario met her gaze without a single flicker of emotion.
"My empire has an heir, Vanessa," Cesario said softly. "And her name is Elsie."
