Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

One year after the morning David Vance walked into my cubicle with his slick suit and his hollow smile, the world had settled into a brilliant, unshakeable rhythm of success.

It was a crisp, crystal-clear Friday afternoon in late November. The autumn leaves had turned into magnificent shades of copper and gold across the city parks, swirling in the brisk wind off Lake Michigan.

I sat at my executive desk on the top floor of Meridian Logistics, closing my final Q3 operational review spreadsheet with a satisfying click of my mouse.

My phone buzzed against the polished wood.

It was a calendar notification: Saturday, 11:00 AM - Annual Logistics Summit Keynote Address: 'Building Resilient Infrastructure from the Ground Up.'

I smiled, locking my screen and standing up from my chair.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the magnificent expanse of the Chicago skyline stretching out toward the horizon. The sun was beginning its slow descent, painting the clouds in breathtaking ribbons of violet, gold, and deep crimson.

There were no traps waiting for me tomorrow. No ambushes planned in dark corporate offices. No ghosts waiting in the wings to steal my life's work.

I reached up, adjusting the collar of my crisp button-down shirt, feeling an absolute, unbreakable sense of peace settle over my chest.

The past was a lesson learned in fire. The present was an empire built on truth, vigilance, and unyielding competence.

The new hire had come to replace me, but all he had done was teach me how to conquer the board.

I took a deep, uninhibited breath of the cool afternoon air, stepping forward into a future that was wide, open, and endlessly bright.
