Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Ledger

Twelve months after the market crash of Wall Street, the autumn sun rose over the Manhattan skyline in a brilliant, breathtaking wash of liquid gold, burning the morning mist off the East River until the glass towers of the financial district sparkled like a field of crushed diamonds.

At 8:30 AM, the digital clock on my dual-monitor setup clicked to life in the seventh-floor corner office of Apex Financial.

8:30:00 AM.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the morning commuter traffic was flowing smoothly across the Brooklyn Bridge.

I stood by the glass, holding a ceramic mug of dark roast coffee, looking down at the bullpen below.

The desks were full. The monitors were glowing. The analysts were working with the calm, focused intensity of professionals who knew their labor was valued, protected, and respected.

My phone buzzed softly on the desk.

I picked it up. A secure notification from the federal bankruptcy receiver flashed across the screen:

LIQUIDATION PROCEEDINGS FINALIZED: ESTATE OF JULIAN VANCE ASSETS SEIZED: $42,000,000 RESTITUTION DISBURSED TO APEX CLIENT TRUST: 100%

I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone back down on the polished wood.

The past was a closed file, archived in an unalterable database that required no further review.

The elevator banks at the south end of the floor chimed with a clean, electronic ring.

The brass doors slid open, and Sarah Chen stepped out, carrying two fresh pastries from the bakery downstairs, laughing as she argued with an incoming junior analyst about algorithmic trade execution.

I turned away from the window, walked out of the corner office, and stepped down onto the bullpen floor to start the morning briefing.

The ledgers were balanced. The system was secure.

And as the 9:30 opening bell rang across the street, the morning belonged entirely to us.
