Chapter 8 - The Press Conference Ambush

The Grand Ballroom on the third floor of the Sterling Tower was a blinding cathedral of flashes, television cameras, and frantic journalistic chatter.

Over two hundred reporters from Bloomberg, CNBC, Reuters, and the Wall Street Journal packed the velvet-lined rows, their microphones forming an aluminum hedge along the front of the stage. Behind the podium hung a massive blue banner bearing the intertwined logos of Vane Robotics and Sterling Global Enterprises.

To the outside world, this was the financial event of the quarter: the brilliant young tech prodigy Harper Vane marrying her cutting-edge autonomous robotics firm to the multi-billion-dollar industrial muscle of the Sterling dynasty, with a high-society wedding to follow in the spring.

Nobody in that room knew that the groom was currently sitting in a concrete basement holding cell with a dislocated shoulder, or that the chief corporate counsel was vomiting in a federal transport van.

Behind the heavy velvet curtains of the backstage staging area, I stood beside Marcus Sterling.

I had changed out of my navy silk blouse into an immaculate, tailored ivory power suit with sharp satin lapels—the exact shade of armor my father would have loved. My dark hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon; my amber eyes were steady, clear, and razor-sharp.

Beside us stood United States Attorney Evelyn Vance—no relation to Victoria, but rather the formidable chief federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Illinois, flanked by three senior SEC directors.

"The asset seizure warrants were executed six minutes ago in Zurich and Manhattan," Evelyn Vance whispered, reviewing her encrypted tablet. "Meridian’s primary operating accounts are completely paralyzed. Their stock is currently halted on the New York Stock Exchange pending regulatory review."

Marcus nodded once, his face an impenetrable mask of iron. He turned to me, offering his arm with formal, old-world deference.

"Are you ready, Miss Vane?" Marcus asked quietly.

I looked down at the gold signet ring on my right pinky finger—my father's ring, bearing the simple engraved motto: Veritas Vincit. Truth Conquers.

"I’ve been ready for seven years, Marcus," I replied.

We stepped through the velvet curtains.

The flashbulbs erupted in a synchronized, blinding storm of white light. The murmur of two hundred reporters rose into an eager roar as cameras tracked our movement toward the long dais.

I walked to the center podium, not as a nervous tech founder hiding behind a charming fiance, but as the sole, sovereign commander of the room. I adjusted the microphone with steady fingers, waiting five seconds while the room gradually settled into an expectant hush.

"Good morning," I began, my voice ringing out across the ballroom with crisp, effortless authority. "Thank you all for coming on such short notice."

A reporter from the front row shouted out: "Miss Vane! Where is Julian Sterling? Is it true the executive merger documents were signed at seven this morning?"

A cold, beautiful smile touched my lips.

"Mr. Julian Sterling will not be joining us today," I announced smoothly. "Nor will he be joining Vane Robotics, Sterling Global Enterprises, or any other corporate entity in this country for the foreseeable future."

A wave of confused whispering swept through the press corps. Pencils froze over legal pads; television producers pressed headsets against their ears.

"Thirty minutes ago," I continued, projecting my voice straight into the central network cameras, "Julian Sterling and former corporate counsel Victoria Vance were placed under federal arrest. They have been formally indicted on charges of corporate espionage, international money laundering, grand larceny, and the premeditated murder of my father, Dr. Arthur Vane, on October 14 seven years ago."

The ballroom exploded.

Reporters leaped to their feet, shouting questions in a deafening, overlapping cacophony of absolute shock. Flashbulbs went off in frantic, strobe-like waves.

Marcus Sterling stepped up to the second microphone, raising his right hand. The sheer weight of his presence commanded silence, the room instantly hushing to hear the patriarch speak.

"The Sterling family does not harbor criminals," Marcus said, his voice thundering through the speakers like an iron bell. "My son orchestrated the murder of one of this nation's greatest scientific minds to settle illegal debts with a criminal defense consortium known as the Meridian Group. For seven years, they attempted to steal the ARES neural architecture. Today, that conspiracy has been completely eradicated."

He stepped back, gesturing to United States Attorney Evelyn Vance, who stepped forward with a sheaf of legal indictments.

"As of 8:45 this morning," Evelyn announced, "federal agents have executed arrest warrants for twelve senior executives of the Meridian Group across three states. The Department of Justice has seized over two billion dollars in illicit assets. And the proprietary rights to the ARES neural swarming architecture have been permanently confirmed as the sole, unencumbered intellectual property of Harper Vane."

I stepped back to the podium, looking out over the sea of stunned, scrambling reporters.

"Vane Robotics will not be merging with Sterling Global under an acquisition model," I concluded, my eyes blazing with fierce, untamable pride. "Instead, we have formed the Arthur Vane Foundation for Open Science—a fifty-fifty humanitarian joint venture with Sterling Global that will deploy autonomous disaster-relief drone fleets across thirty-four developing nations, free of charge."

I looked directly into the central camera lens—knowing that in the holding cell beneath the federal courthouse, Julian Sterling was watching this broadcast on an overhead television monitor.

"My father's dream is not for sale," I said softly into the microphone. "And the throne he built will never belong to a thief."
