Chapter 6 - The Broken Viper

While Clara was holding her mother’s hand in the quiet, sunlight-drenched recovery wing of Mount Sinai Hospital, Donald Vance was sitting in an interrogation room in the basement of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse.

The room smelled of stale instant coffee, damp concrete, and industrial bleach. There were no mahogany panels here, no velvet drapes, and no chilled bottles of vintage champagne. Donald was dressed in a standard-issue, rough orange prison jumpsuit that was two sizes too large, hanging awkwardly off his slumped frame. His manicured hands were cuffed to an iron ring welded directly into the center of the steel table. The bespoke silver-streaked hairstyle was matted with sweat, and the cruel, imperious sneer that had terrorized corporate boardrooms for thirty years was gone, replaced by a twitching, hollow stare of utter defeat.

The heavy steel door buzzed and swung open.

Special Agent Sarah Reyes walked in, carrying a single manila folder, and sat down across from him. She didn't speak. She simply slid a digital voice recorder across the table and pressed play.

Donald’s own voice crackled through the speaker, crisp and horrifyingly clear:

"...I don't care what you have to do, Viktor. Arthur is at the bottom of the Atlantic, but the wife is still talking to her lawyers. Take a strike team to Connecticut tonight. Bag her, move her to the facility in the Adirondacks, and if the kid is there, drop her in the river. No loose ends. The consortium belongs to me now."

The recording stopped with a quiet click.

Donald didn't look up. He stared at the scratched steel surface of the table, his breathing shallow, his knuckles stark white against the iron chain.

"That audio was recovered from Viktor Kane’s private cloud server forty minutes ago," Reyes said, her voice flat and merciless. "Kane was arrested trying to board a private flight to Colombia from a private airfield in New Jersey. He gave up your encryption keys, your offshore account numbers, and the location of your slush funds in Zurich in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table."

Donald’s lips twitched. "I... I was Arthur's brother," he whispered, his voice cracking into a dry rattle. "I built half of that empire. Arthur was weak! He wanted to give away our profits to worker pensions, to community foundations, to clean energy initiatives! He didn't understand that the market is a jungle! You have to kill or be killed!"

"Arthur didn't build an empire to kill people, Donald," Reyes replied, leaning forward, her eyes locking onto the broken executive. "He built it to create things that lasted. You built a house of cards on murder, extortion, and greed. And it took a nine-year-old barefoot girl to knock the whole damn thing down."

Donald closed his eyes, a dry, ragged sob escaping his throat. "What are they offering me?"

"Offering you?" Reyes let out a cold, humorless laugh as she stood up, tucking the folder under her arm. "There are no plea deals on the table, Donald. The Attorney General personally signed the indictment. You are facing three counts of capital murder, forty-two counts of federal wire fraud, racketeering, and treason. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a concrete box at ADX Florence, twenty-three hours a day in solitary confinement, with nothing to look at but a four-inch slit of sky."

She reached the door, knocking once for the guard to buzz it open. Before stepping out, she paused and looked back at the ruined billionaire.

"By the way," Reyes added with a cruel, satisfied smile, "under the court-approved restructuring, Clara just authorized the donation of your thirty-million-dollar Greenwich estate to the Coalition for the Homeless. They’re turning your marble ballroom into a public shelter for barefoot kids who need a warm bed and a hot meal."

The door slammed shut with a heavy, concussive BANG, leaving Donald Vance completely alone in the fluorescent glare, screaming in impotent, agonizing rage against the iron chains binding him to the floor.
