Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Retribution

Two months after the wedding, winter arrived in the Hudson Valley with an unforgiving, crystalline frost that coated the stone balustrades of the Sterling estate in sheets of diamond ice.
Inside the executive boardroom of the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth.
Evelyn Romano sat on a cold steel folding chair, dressed in the coarse, faded khaki uniform of a federal inmate. Her manicured nails had long since been clipped short; her golden bob was overgrown, unwashed, and streaked with dark roots; and the aristocratic arrogance that had defined her existence for thirty years had been hollowed out into a sullen, twitching bitterness.
Across the stainless-steel table sat Assistant United States Attorney Eleanor Vance, accompanied by two forensic investigators from the Internal Revenue Service.
"Your father's formal resignation from the United States Senate was accepted by the Governor at noon today, Evelyn," Eleanor Vance stated, sliding a certified court order across the metal surface. "The family estate in Albany has been placed under federal receivership to satisfy the nineteen million dollars in restitution judgments awarded to the Hudson Port Authority and the Department of Health."
Evelyn’s hands trembled against the steel. Her breath came in short, ragged wheezes.
"My father is an old man," Evelyn croaked, her voice raspy from months of silence in the general population wing. "He had nothing to do with the accounting—"
"Your father signed the regulatory suppression orders, Evelyn," Eleanor interrupted smoothly, not a shred of pity in her dark eyes. "He used his senatorial privilege to bury three separate state ethics complaints filed by hospital administrators who tried to defend Elena Vance's credentials. He was an active, knowing co-conspirator in a federal extortion racketeering enterprise."
Eleanor opened a thick leather portfolio, revealing a fresh set of documents stamped with the seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
"The grand jury has returned an additional eighteen-count superseding indictment against you personally, Ms. Romano. Aggravated identity theft, healthcare fraud, and witness tampering. The plea deal your public defender negotiated has been officially revoked by Judge Sterling."
Evelyn lunged forward against the table, the heavy steel chain connecting her handcuffs to her leather waist belt clattering violently against the metal.
"Judge Sterling?!" she screamed, her eyes bulging with hysterical fury. "Mark's uncle! It's a setup! It's a corrupt family dynasty protecting a street whore and her bastard child! I was supposed to be the lady of that house! I was supposed to rule this city!"
"You were a thief with an expensive pedigree, Evelyn," Eleanor said, standing up and closing the portfolio with a sharp, concussive snap. "You spent four years believing that wealth gave you the right to erase human beings. Now, you will spend the next twenty-two years learning that in the eyes of the law, an honest nurse carries infinitely more weight than a corrupt socialite."
Eleanor turned to the two correctional officers standing by the reinforced steel door.
"Take her back to her unit."
May you like
Evelyn shrieked, kicking and thrashing against the officers as they seized her arms, dragging her backward across the linoleum floor, her fingernails clawing uselessly at the cold air until the heavy steel security doors slammed shut with a final, echoing thud.
The shadow that had tried to extinguish a family had officially been sealed in concrete forever.
