Chapter 2 - The Visitor Log of 2023

The master library of the Whitfield estate was a two-story cavern of hand-carved mahogany, dark green velvet, and twenty-foot arched leaded-glass windows overlooking the rain-lashed gardens.

Adrien Whitfield sat behind a massive walnut desk that had belonged to his grandfather. The room was illuminated only by the dying embers in the massive limestone hearth and the pale white glare of his laptop screen. Spread across the leather blotter were six thick manila folders, three digital flash drives, and a bound leather ledger bearing the gold seal of the Whitfield Maritime and Security Archive.

He had changed into a dark charcoal cashmere sweater and trousers. His hair was slightly disheveled, and his slate-gray eyes, usually cold and unreadable, fixed on me with a terrifying, razor-sharp intensity as I stopped three paces before his desk.

"Close the double doors, Sarah," Adrien commanded, his baritone rough as crushed granite.

I turned, pulling the heavy oak doors shut until the brass latch clicked with finality.

"Mr. Whitfield, if this is about Aisha running into the corridor," I began, my hands clasped tightly against my linen apron, "I take full responsibility. I will ensure she stays in the staff quarters—"

"Where was she born, Sarah?" Adrien interrupted.

The question was delivered without heat, but it landed in the quiet room with the weight of an iron anvil.

"Excuse me?"

"Your daughter," Adrien said, leaning forward, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "Your employment application states she was born at Mercy General Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on October 14, 2023. It lists her father as an unnamed deceased laborer."

"Yes, sir," I lied, keeping my voice steady through pure survival instinct. "My late partner passed away before she was born."

Adrien tapped a key on his laptop, rotating the screen so I could see the digital display.

"Ten minutes ago, my chief of private intelligence ran a forensic cross-reference on Mercy General’s municipal vital statistics registry for October 2023," Adrien said, his voice dropping into a register of chilling stillness. "No child named Aisha was born in that hospital on that date. No birth certificate under your maiden name exists in the State of Iowa."

My blood ran cold. The air left my lungs in a ragged, silent gasp.

"Mr. Whitfield, please," I whispered, taking half a step backward toward the exit. "I had to leave my past behind. My ex-partner was dangerous... I had to purchase private documentation in Omaha to protect my child—"

"I don't care about your ex-partner, Sarah," Adrien said, rising to his full six-foot-two height.

He picked up the leather-bound ledger from the desk, opening it to a page marked with a yellow bookmark, and thrust it under the desk lamp.

"This is the private visitor log from the Blackwood Gorge Trauma Center in upstate New York," Adrien said, his voice shaking with a sudden, violent undercurrent of unspent grief and suppressed fury. "Dated November 18, 2023. Four hours after my wife’s car went over the bridge."

I looked down at the handwritten entry:

PATIENT: JANE DOE (CRITICAL HYPOTHERMIA / EMERGENCY CAESAREAN)

ATTENDING SURGEON: DR. ARTHUR COLE

VISITOR / TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION: CARTER VANCE & VICTORIA STERLING

My eyes widened as I read the name: Victoria Sterling.

Victoria Sterling was Adrien Whitfield’s stepmother—the powerful, untouchable matriarch who controlled thirty percent of the Whitfield Global Logistics voting shares.

"Arthur Cole was on Victoria's private medical payroll for ten years," Adrien whispered, his knuckles whitening against the desk. "The official police report told me my wife and unborn child were washed out to the Atlantic. But this log shows an emergency caesarean was performed at 11:40 PM. A female infant was delivered alive."

He stepped around the desk, stopping two feet from where I stood shaking.

"And three weeks ago, Sarah," Adrien said, his eyes boring into my soul, "you were hired through an elite domestic agency owned entirely by Victoria Sterling's family."
