Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Manor

Over the next three months, the Oyster Bay estate underwent a complete, historic transformation.

The dark, museum-like gloom that had hung over the property during my seven years of grief was systematically eradicated.

I hired a team of master architects and artisans to completely remodel the west wing into an expansive, sunlit family residence for Sophia and Luca.

The heavy blackout drapes and cold marble fixtures were removed, replaced by soaring architectural glass windows that flooded every room with warm, golden northern sunlight. We installed wide white oak floors, open libraries filled with children's literature, and a sprawling two-story playroom that opened out onto lush gardens of fragrant lavender, white hydrangeas, and ancient weeping willows overlooking the bay.

Dr. Sarah Lin oversaw the children's complete medical rehabilitation.

Luca’s lungs healed entirely; within six weeks, his cheeks were rosy, his frame filled out with healthy weight, and his joyful, energetic laughter echoed through the long corridors of the house.

Sophia was enrolled in the elite Green Vale Country Day School, excelling at the top of her class, her brilliant, observant mind flourishing in an environment where she no longer had to fight for survival.

On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, I stood on the wide cedar veranda overlooking the private harbor, sipping fresh roast coffee.

Down on the emerald green lawn near the rose garden, five-year-old Luca and seven-year-old Sophia were running with energetic, fearless speed, playing tag with Barnaby, a gentle golden retriever puppy I had adopted for their first spring at home.

Sophia was laughing—a clear, powerful, unburdened sound that carried across the water, her yellow dress glowing in the sunlight, holding her restored rag doll Bella proudly in her hand.

Frank Callahan walked out through the French doors, wearing an open-collared linen shirt, holding a thick leather portfolio.

"The corporate restructuring is finalized, Vincent," Frank reported with a warm, proud smile. "All eighty million dollars recovered from Dominic's seized offshore accounts have been consolidated into The Elena Rossi Children’s Healthcare and Housing Foundation."

I looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the sound where our merchant vessels sailed peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sapphire sky.

"What are the initial operational directives, Frank?" I asked softly.

"The foundation has broken ground on three regional pediatric residential academies in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens," Frank replied. "Providing free, state-of-the-art medical care, private schooling, and safe housing for over twelve hundred vulnerable children and single mothers."

I felt an immense, clean warmth fill the empty spaces of my soul.

"Elena would have loved that, Frank," I whispered. "Every single brick."
