Chapter 8 - The Federal Trial of Dominic Moretti

In September, the United States District Court in Lower Manhattan convened for the formal criminal trial of The United States versus Dominic Moretti and Apex Holdings.
The proceedings drew intense international media coverage, dominating the front pages of every major publication, exposing the chilling reality of family betrayal, trust embezzlement, and the deliberate abandonment of minor heirs that had operated behind high-society boardrooms.
Frank Callahan, Dr. Sarah Lin, and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats. Sophia and Luca remained at the Oyster Bay estate, playing safely in the autumn gardens with Mrs. Ferrara and Barnaby.
Dominic Moretti sat at the defense table in an orange federal inmate jumpsuit.
The transformation was absolute.
Without his bespoke suits, private drivers, and manufactured aristocratic posture, Dominic looked like a hollow, broken phantom, his silver hair unkempt, his hands and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.
Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the decrypted Swiss wire transfers, the forged census documents, and the sworn depositions of the private investigators who had tracked Elena for seven years.
When Marcus Reed presented the final exhibit—the physical rag doll Bella, with its crooked, handmade stitches—the entire courtroom fell into an absolute, sacred hush.
"A dying mother stitched her love into cloth before she closed her eyes in a charity ward," Marcus Reed told the jury, his voice ringing with profound moral clarity. "And her brave seven-year-old daughter stepped into the rain with that doll to save her brother's life, exposing seventy million dollars of corporate greed and bringing an empire back into the light."
The federal jury deliberated for exactly eighteen minutes.
The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all thirty-two felony counts:
"On all counts of Grand Corporate Larceny, Trust Embezzlement, Child Endangerment, and Federal Racketeering under the RICO Act—Guilty on all counts."
Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:
"Dominic Moretti, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against an innocent mother and your own flesh and blood to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared. "You are hereby sentenced to Thirty-Five Years at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute without the possibility of early parole."
The wooden gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Dominic collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced predator down the subterranean holding corridor forever.
I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Frank and Sarah, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
