Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light

One year after the evening an eight-year-old girl pointed across a crowded ballroom and exposed a monster's lie, the Garrison estate was bathed in the brilliant, golden light of late summer.

It was an exquisite Sunday afternoon. The sun cast long, sparkling ripples across the quiet waters of the Hudson, and the gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming white jasmine, pine needles, and fresh river water across the wide stone terrace.

A long teak dining table was set upon the lawn beneath the shade of the grand white oaks, decorated with fresh flowers, platters of fresh local seafood, and sparkling mineral water.

Frank Callahan, Dr. Sarah Lin, my sister, Maya, and our closest partners sat around the table, their cheerful conversation and acoustic piano music drifting through the open French doors of the drawing room.

Down on the emerald grass near the garden fountain, nine-year-old Maya was running with energetic, fearless speed, tossing a frisbee for Barnaby, while one-year-old Thomas toddled happily across the soft clover with Alexander holding his small hands.

Eleanor stood on the terrace balustrade, holding a glass of chilled sparkling cider, watching her husband and son with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable peace.

She reached out, taking my hand as I walked up beside her, our fingers intertwining over the cool stone railing.

"What are you thinking about, Eleanor?" I asked softly, a warm smile touching my lips.

Eleanor looked out across the sparkling blue water where the white sailboats glided peacefully toward the horizon, then down at Maya laughing in the sunlight.

"I was thinking about the words that broke the dark, Sarah," Eleanor whispered softly, her amber eyes shining with boundless, eternal joy. "How a little girl with a brave heart saw through thirty million dollars of lies with two simple words."

Alexander scooped Thomas into his arms, walked up the terrace steps with Maya bounding happily beside them, and wrapped his free arm securely around Eleanor’s waist, pulling all of us into the warm, protective circle of our real family.

"The truth is always simple, my love," Alexander smiled, leaning down to press his lips against Eleanor’s temple. "And it will shine forever."

The evening sun dipped below the western bluffs, painting the sky and the river in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and molten gold.

The dark basement was gone forever, the fake pillows and forged graves had dissolved into dust, and the sanctuary they had rebuilt stood strong, open, sovereign, and filled with a lifetime of love, truth, and unbroken peace.
