Chapter 3 - The Cage of Blackwood

The subterranean room was vast, brightly lit by clinical LED panels, and equipped with a full obstetric ICU suite: fetal heart monitors, an ultrasound workstation, an infant incubator, and an emergency surgical delivery table.

In the center of the room, propped up against clean white pillows on an adjustable hospital bed, was Eleanor Vance-Whitmore.

She was frail, her auburn hair falling in soft waves past her shoulders, her skin pale from months without direct sunlight, but her amber eyes were sharp, lucid, and filled with an unbreakable, maternal fire. Her hand rested protectively over her swollen, eight-month pregnant belly, shielding her unborn child.

When the heavy door slammed open, Eleanor flinched, pulling the blanket tighter, bracing for another session of forced medical examinations by Vanessa’s corrupt staff.

Then, she looked up.

Her breath seized in her throat.

Alexander stood in the doorway. He didn't move. He didn't speak. The towering, untouchable billionaire who commanded fleets across the globe collapsed to his knees right on the cold linoleum floor, burying his face in his hands, weeping with the raw, shattered agony of a man who had just witnessed the resurrection of his soul.

"Eleanor..." Alexander choked out, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. "My God... Eleanor."

Eleanor stared at him, tears welling in her amber eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. She reached out with a trembling hand, her fingers brushing the dark hair on his bowed head.

"Alexander?" she whispered, her voice cracked and hoarse from disuse. "Is it... is it really you? Or am I dreaming again?"

Alexander surged forward, wrapping his massive, strong arms around her shoulders with infinite gentleness, pulling her fragile frame into his chest. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in the scent of her hair, kissing her tears as both of them wept in the cold basement room.

"I’m here, El," Alexander wept, his large hands carefully cupping her pregnant belly, feeling the strong, rhythmic kick of his unborn child against his palm. "I’m here. You’re safe. Nobody is ever going to touch you or our baby again."

I stood by the doorway beside Frank Callahan, feeling a lump rise in my throat as tears of pure, unburdened relief pricked my eyes.

Eleanor looked past Alexander’s shoulder, her eyes locking onto mine.

"The little girl..." Eleanor whispered softly. "The little girl at the hotel... did she find the picture?"

I walked forward, taking Eleanor’s cold, fragile hand in mine with deep respect. "My daughter Maya found it, Eleanor. And she brought your husband home."
