Chapter 4 - The Architecture of the Theft

By 1:30 p.m., the master residential suite on the third floor of the Moretti estate in Oyster Bay had been converted into an active military command bunker.
Clara Vance lay in an oversized mahogany four-poster bed beneath a plush down duvet, an intravenous line administering targeted antibiotics, bronchodilators, and high-calorie nutritional supplements into her arm under the direct supervision of Dr. Robert Sterling. Her breathing had stabilized; the dusky gray tint had receded from her lips, replaced by a healthy, delicate rose.
Lily sat on a deep velvet window bench overlooking the gray waters of Long Island Sound, freshly bathed, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and blue trousers provided by the estate staff, eating a plate of warm roast chicken and roasted potatoes with quiet, wondrous focus.
Downstairs in the private study, the air was cold enough to freeze blood.
Arthur Ross sat behind my desk, surrounded by forty red-tabbed banker's boxes containing unsealed corporate charters, shipping manifests, and decrypted Cayman banking ledgers.
Beside him stood Detective Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
I stood by the roaring limestone hearth, dressed in a fresh charcoal three-piece suit, my ribs wrapped in tight medical compression bands, sipping black espresso from a porcelain cup.
"Let’s review the execution of the betrayal, Arthur," I commanded, my voice slicing through the quiet room.
Arthur Ross adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, tapping his digital stylus against the eighty-inch digital wall screen:
THE MORETTI-VANCE SOVEREIGN MARITIME ACCORD (1998)
PRIMARY ASSET: 65% CONTROLLING PREFERRED EQUITY IN BROOKLYN & NEWARK TERMINALS ($240,000,000.00)
CO-FIDUCIARIES: SALVATORE MORETTI & THOMAS VANCE
SUCCESSION CHARTER: EQUITY VESTS UNCONDITIONALLY IN DOMINIC MORETTI & CLARA VANCE UPON LINEAL MATRIMONY OR PRODUCTION OF A DIRECT HEIR.
"Here is the truth of that night eleven years ago, Dominic," Arthur Ross explained, his weathered face set in lines of grim disgust. "Eleven years ago, your father and Thomas Vance finalized the master trust that would permanently unite the Moretti shipping fleet with the Vance municipal riparian rights. If you married Clara, you and Clara would hold an unassailable sixty-five percent voting majority across every deepwater berth in New York."
"And Julian?" I asked, my knuckles whitening where I held my cup.
"Julian Moretti had already accumulated eighty million dollars in unhedged mezzanine debts with an offshore private equity consortium in Zurich," Arthur revealed. "Julian calculated that if he separated you and Clara, forged her death certificate, and kept you unmarried, the master trust covenants would default to the managing trustee: Julian."
David Sterling, the chief financial auditor, leaned forward, sliding an unsealed, gold-embossed document across the desk.
"Julian spent eleven years skimming twelve million dollars a year from the port worker pension fund to service his Zurich interest payments," David said. "When Clara refused to surrender her father's original survey registers yesterday, Julian hired the Red Hook crew to abduct you and hold you until you signed the port liquidation deeds."
I set my espresso cup down with a sharp, hollow clank.
"Where is Julian right now, Arthur?"
"He has convened an emergency plenary session of the Northeast Maritime Consortium at the Harvard Club of New York on West 44th Street," Arthur reported, checking his encrypted watch. "Scheduled for two-fifteen this afternoon. He intends to present a forged death certificate for you, claim you were executed by rival dock gangs, and execute the master terminal sale before the markets close."
I turned toward the mirror above the hearth, checking the chamber of my customized Kimber .45 before sliding it into my concealed shoulder holster.
"Arthur," I spoke into the room, each word dropping like an iron deadbolt into place.

"Yes, Dominic?"
"Assemble four tactical assault teams. Call the federal marshals. We are going to attend Julian’s victory banquet in person."
