Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Harvard Club

At 2:15 p.m., the grand mahogany-paneled dining hall of the historic Harvard Club of New York on West 44th Street was convened for the annual Northeast Maritime Infrastructure and Private Equity Assembly.
Seated at the central elevated dais was Julian Moretti.
At thirty-eight, Julian was the picture of refined Ivy League vanity: bespoke navy three-piece suit, silver-cuffed white shirt, gold Patek Philippe watch on his left wrist, sipping vintage single-malt scotch, holding court with six senior commercial lenders from First Manhattan Trust and three corrupt port authority commissioners.
Beside him sat Julianna Sterling—his financial partner from Zurich—reviewing the printed draft of their upcoming corporate prospectus:
THE HUDSON-EAST RIVER INFRASTRUCTURE RESTRUCTURING // $240M ASSET SALE.
"A tragic, devastating day for our family and for this city, gentlemen," Julian announced smoothly, wiping a theatrical tear from his eye with a linen napkin. "My older brother Dominic was assassinated in Red Hook early this morning by unorganized labor factions. However, to ensure absolute operational continuity across the sixty deepwater berths, I am exercising my emergency succession proxy to assume full sovereign command before the closing bell."
The heavy carved double oak doors of the grand dining hall were suddenly blown off their hinges with a concussive hydraulic roar.
BANG.
The chamber quartet near the mezzanine died mid-chord.
The eighty corporate titans, bank presidents, and municipal judges seated across the room fell into an immediate, paralyzed silence.
Stepping into the dining hall was Dominic Moretti.
He was dressed in an immaculate, custom-tailored dark charcoal three-piece wool suit with razor-sharp lapels, radiating total, uncontested dominance.
Walking beside him, holding his left arm with quiet, sovereign dignity, was Clara Vance.
She was breathtaking in an exquisite, tailored dark navy wool three-piece suit with an ivory silk blouse, her auburn hair swept back into an elegant chignon, wearing her father’s restored gold signet compass around her neck.
And walking on his other side, holding Dominic’s right hand with proud, ten-year-old grace, was Lily Vance-Moretti—wearing a pastel yellow dress and shiny patent leather shoes, holding her small canvas bag of scrap copper proudly under her arm.
Following behind us were Arthur Ross, Detective Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division, and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by six armed federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers.
Julian Moretti set his crystal tumbler of scotch down with a sharp clatter, his eyebrows drawing together in a mask of pure, unadulterated horror as the color drained from his face in a single, catastrophic wave.
"Dominic...? Clara...?" Julian stammered, leaping to his feet, knocking his chair onto the hardwood floorboards. "What... what is the meaning of this theatrical disruption? The Brooklyn detectives confirmed your vehicle was found burned in the canal—"
"The Brooklyn detectives confirmed what you paid your hitmen fifty thousand dollars to stage, Julian," Dominic said, his clear, resonant baritone booming through the vaulted hall without the aid of a microphone. "And your corporate credit facility was terminated at noon today."
Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping a thick, red-tabbed federal dossier directly onto the linen tablecloth right beside Julian’s plate.
"Julian Moretti, Julianna Sterling," Arthur announced, his deep voice carrying the cold finality of an executioner reading a docket. "You are formally served with federal grand jury indictments returned ninety minutes ago under Cause Number 26-CR-9941."
Julian scrambled backward against the cedar wainscoting, his hands trembling violently. "On what charges? This is an internal corporate restructuring between family members!"
"Forty-eight counts of federal enterprise racketeering under the RICO Act, aggravated kidnapping, attempted capital murder, grand corporate embezzlement, and the industrial homicide of Thomas Vance eleven years ago," Special Agent Sarah Lin stated with freezing clinical detachment. "Your Red Hook enforcers signed full confessions at sunrise. We have the decrypted Zurich banking ledgers, the security footage of your men abducting Dominic, and the recorded audio files of your conspiracy."
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color, leaving his skin the sallow, grayish hue of wet drywall.
He looked around at the six banking partners, who were already pushing their chairs back, visibly dissociating themselves from the Moretti-Sterling syndicate.
Two federal marshals in tactical blazers stepped forward, unholstering heavy stainless-steel handcuffs.
"Stand up, Mr. Moretti. Stand up, Miss Sterling. Place your hands behind your back."
CLICK. CLICK.
As Julian was secured, his hollow, bloodshot eyes caught Lily’s where the little girl stood holding Dominic’s hand beneath the chandeliers.

Lily pulled the jagged piece of rusty scrap metal from her bag, pointing it at Julian’s face, her clear, ringing voice carrying across the breathless room:
"You're the bad uncle who paid men to tie my daddy to a chair. But I cut the rope, and you don't get to hurt our family ever again."
