Chapter 4 - The Breach at Midnight

At 2:15 AM, the storm broke over Chicago with the fury of a detonated warhead.
Heavy freezing rain lashed against the fifty-story glass panels, the howling gale turning the city skyline into a blur of black water and smeared neon.
Inside the master suite, Leo was fast asleep in the center of the massive four-poster bed, swaddled in Egyptian cotton sheets, clutching his illustrated rocket book beneath his chin.
I stood by the window in a dark tactical sweater and trousers, my Kimber .45 resting in its holster at my hip, watching the dark waters of Lake Michigan churn below.
A sudden, sharp mechanical tone chimed from the tactical headset resting on the nightstand.
I pressed the earpiece into my ear. "Report, Dmitri."
"Boss! We have an active breach in the subterranean garage!" Dmitri’s voice was clipped, background gunfire echoing through the channel. "Three armored utility vans breached the south loading bay with hydraulic rams! Sixteen tactical contractors in sterile black assault gear! They cut the main power grid and are taking the private service lift straight to fifty!"
"Containment Protocol Iron Wolf," I commanded without raising my voice. "Deploy the EMP pulse in the elevator shaft. Seal the master suite doors."
The lights in the penthouse flickered, cutting out for two seconds before the amber emergency battery arrays illuminated the hallways in a deep, bloody glow.
From the hallway outside the master suite, the heavy concussive bang of a breaching charge shook the limestone walls.
Leo stirred on the bed, his eyes fluttering open in pure, terrified confusion. "Dad...? What's that loud noise?"
I walked to the bedside, scooping Leo into my left arm, pulling my sidearm with my right.
"Stay close to me, Leo," I whispered calmly into his ear. "Hold on to my neck. Don't let go."
Leo buried his face into my shoulder, his small arms locking around my throat like iron bands.
The heavy double mahogany doors of the master suite were blown inward by a controlled explosive charge, filling the air with white plaster dust and pulverized wood.
Three mercenaries dressed in sterile black body armor, carrying suppressed submachine guns, charged through the smoke, their laser sights sweeping the room.
The lead mercenary locked his red dot on my chest, shouting into his throat mic: "Target confirmed! The boy is in his arms! Terminate both—"
I fired three precise, lethal double-taps from my Kimber .45 in 0.4 seconds.
The heavy .45 hollow-points struck all three contractors in center mass with concussive force, dropping them flat onto the shattered floorboards before their fingers could touch their triggers.
From the corridor behind them, Dmitri and four of our tactical operators swept through the breach, their carbines barking in synchronized, devastating precision, neutralizing the remaining assault team in less than ten seconds.
The penthouse fell into an absolute, dead silence, broken only by the hiss of rain through the shattered hallway windows and the steady, unhurried rhythm of my heartbeat against Leo's cheek.
Dmitri stepped into the room, his tactical vest dusted with drywall, kicking the weapons away from the fallen contractors.
"The lower levels are clear, Boss," Dmitri reported, his breathing heavy. "We captured the team commander on the service stairs. It’s Viktor Cole."
May you like
I looked down at the mercenary lying on the floor, then turned to Dmitri, my slate-gray eyes burning with absolute, sovereign wrath.
"Bring Viktor Cole to the boardroom on forty-eight," I commanded. "And fuel the private helicopter at the lakefront pad. It’s time to pay Marcus Vance a visit in Boston."
