Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Lockdown in Boston

At 8:30 AM, the forty-fifth floor of the Vance Maritime Financial Center in downtown Boston was placed under emergency federal quarantine.
The grand thirty-seat executive boardroom, encased in soaring architectural glass overlooking the stormy gray expanse of Boston Harbor, was occupied by Marcus Vance, his four corporate litigators, and six senior directors of the Atlantic shipping syndicate.
Marcus Vance—a fifty-two-year-old corporate sociopath dressed in a bespoke pinstripe suit, his silver hair slicked back—was standing at the head of the long obsidian table, raising a crystal glass of champagne.
"Gentlemen," Marcus announced with a smug, triumphant grin. "Today marks the final consolidation of the Vance empire. With the formal judicial closing of the late Julian Vance’s estate, sixty percent of the Atlantic deep-water berths are officially under our sole, unchallengeable control."
The heavy double mahogany doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges by a concussive hydraulic breach.
The two private security guards standing outside were thrown onto the floor as six armed federal marshals in tactical gear swept into the room with carbines raised at the high ready.
Every director at the table jumped to their feet in sheer, paralyzed terror.
I strode into the boardroom.
I wore an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath my black overcoat, my presence commanding immediate, breathless silence across the entire forty-fifth floor.
Walking on my right flank was Frank Callahan, carrying a heavy steel briefcase stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court.
Walking on my left flank was Dmitri, holding the hand of six-year-old Leo, who wore his clean navy peacoat and carried his rocket book proudly under his arm.
Marcus Vance froze, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers, shattering against the obsidian table in a violent spray of crystal and golden wine.
"Vincent Crowe...?" Marcus stammered, his face turning an ashen shade of wet chalk. "What... what is the meaning of this federal circus? This is a private corporate assembly! You have no standing in Boston!"
Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick volumes of certified probate decrees onto the center of the table with a concussive thud.
"Under emergency judicial orders issued by United States District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at dawn, Marcus," Frank announced, his voice booming across the silent room like a broadsword, "the 2020 probate of Julian Vance has been vacated for premeditated homicide, grand larceny of trust assets, and interstate kidnapping conspiracy."

Frank turned to Leo, gently placing a hand on the boy's shoulder.
"This is Leo Thomas Vance," Frank presented to the stunned board of directors. "The sole biological heir of Julian Vance and Clara Lin, and the certified fifty-one percent controlling shareholder of Vance Global Maritime."
