Chapter 1 - The Cold Return

The front door clicked shut, the sound muffled by the familiar brass latch I had installed five years ago before shipping out. My duffel bag hit the hallway floor with a heavy, dead thud. Six months of red dust, blinding desert heat, and the constant, vibrating hum of mortar shells fell away in a single second. I was home. My overseas deployment was finally over, and my only thought, the only prayer that had kept me breathing through the darkest nights of the tour, was holding Brooke in my arms.

"Brooke?" I called out, my voice raspy, a mixture of exhaustion and eager anticipation. I dropped my boots by the door, stepping lightly onto the hardwood floor of the foyer. The house smelled different. Not like the lavender candles she loved, but like expensive cologne, roasting garlic, and foreign whiskey.

I rounded the corner into the kitchen, a wide smile breaking across my face, ready to scoop her up and spin her around.

The smile died on my lips.

Brooke stood near the island counter, but she wasn't running toward me. She shrank away, her back pressing hard against the white marble, her eyes wide with a frantic, animalistic terror. She looked at me not like a returning husband, but like an executioner who had just breached the gates.

Worse, she wasn't alone.

Standing casually by the stove was a man I had never seen before. He was tall, lean, with sharp features and a slick, arrogant smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. But what made my blood instantly boil wasn't just his presence in my home—it was what he was wearing.

He had on my faded green military combat jacket, the one with my unit patch still stitched to the shoulder. And on his left wrist, lazily tapping against the ceramic mug he was holding, was my favorite gold-plated pocket watch—a family heirloom left to me by my grandfather.

"If you ever touch her without permission again, you'll regret coming back alive." That’s how Trevor greeted me in my own kitchen, wearing my military jacket while my wife trembled silently by the sink. Six months of bloody deployment hadn't prepared me for the sickening distance between us. That night, poisoned by jealousy, I assumed Brooke had moved on with another man. But the moment I quietly locked the bedroom door, demanded answers, and pulled back her oversized sweater, I didn't find betrayal—I uncovered a chilling domestic nightmare of violent bruises and forged legal paperwork.
