Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Ashes

The weeks following Trevor Vance’s arrest were a whirlwind of federal depositions, forensic audits, and legal restructuring. Vance Capital was carved apart like a diseased carcass by the Department of Justice; its illegal assets were frozen, its corrupted executives were indicted on federal racketeering charges, and its limestone fortress was officially designated as a federal evidence repository before being handed over to a state historical trust.

With the federal government’s full cooperation, every single fraudulent debt, forged mortgage contract, and illegal loan agreement Trevor had forced upon Brooke and dozens of other innocent families was declared null and void. The deeds to our home, our savings, and our lives were restored, clean and unblemished.

Brooke spent two weeks at a specialized recovery clinic in Vermont, surrounded by medical professionals and trauma counselors who helped her heal from the physical and psychological scars Trevor had inflicted. When she returned home, the change was miraculous. The ghost of fear that had haunted her steps was completely gone. She walked with her head held high, her smile bright and radiant, ready to face the world on her own terms.

As for me, my military superiors offered me a permanent desk commission in Washington, D.C.—a safe, high-ranking intelligence post with a generous pension and zero combat exposure. But when I sat behind my desk in the capital, looking at satellite maps and threat assessments, I realized my war wasn't fought in government offices.

My life was here. With Brooke.

I submitted my formal resignation from the military, stepping down from active duty with honors, and returned permanently to the quiet New England town where we had first built our dreams.
