Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

Sitting across from Principal Vance’s mahogany desk was Mrs. Brenda Gable, wearing a pastel yellow twinset and holding a porcelain teacup. Next to her sat a woman dressed in designer silk—Victoria Sterling, Mason’s mother.
Principal Vance, a man in his late forties with slicked-back silver hair and a monogrammed cuff peeking from his tailored jacket, dropped his pen in irritation.
“Excuse me!” Vance snapped, rising halfway from his leather chair. “We are in the middle of a private administrative conference. You cannot simply barge into—"
He stopped as his eyes landed on Emma, who immediately tucked her face into the hollow of my neck, trembling.
Mrs. Gable’s teacup rattled against its saucer. A flicker of panic crossed her face, quickly replaced by a mask of indignant fury. “Mr. Carter! What on earth are you doing carrying your daughter through the front offices like an animal? She was placed in quiet reflection for severe behavioral disruption!”
“Quiet reflection?” I repeated. The two words fell from my mouth like lead weights.
“Yes!” Gable scoffed, standing up to assert herself. She smoothed her skirt, shooting a haughty look at Victoria Sterling. “She refused to answer direct academic questions, threw a tantrum, and showed utter disrespect to me and her peers. I sent her to the auxiliary holding area to calm down until dismissal.”
“The auxiliary holding area,” I said evenly, walking straight to the center of the office. “You mean the equipment closet behind the gym. The one with no windows. The one locked from the outside with a manual slide-bolt.”
Victoria Sterling rolled her eyes, scoffing under her breath. “Oh, please. Don’t be melodramatic. Children these days need boundaries. If Mason ever acted up, I’d expect the school to discipline him.”
“Did your son’s discipline ever leave finger-shaped contusions around his wrist, Mrs. Sterling?” I asked, keeping my gaze locked on Gable.
Vance frowned, stepping around his desk. He was a tall man, accustomed to intimidating anxious parents. He tried to puff his chest out, attempting to loom over me. But even in faded jeans and an old canvas jacket, I had three inches on him and forty pounds of dense, combat-tested muscle.
“Mr. Carter, lower your tone immediately,” Vance warned, his voice dripping with condescension. “You are on private property. St. Jude’s operates under strict disciplinary protocols authorized by our board of trustees. If Mrs. Gable felt it necessary to separate your daughter from the classroom, she acted entirely within her professional discretion.”
“Did her professional discretion include striking my daughter in the back?” I asked.
The room went dead silent.
Gable’s face flushed a violent, blotchy red. “That is an outrageous lie! Julian, are you hearing this? The child is fabricating stories to cover for her own delinquency!”
“I didn't lie!” Emma cried out, her small voice shaking as she peeked from behind my shoulder. “You hit me! You said nobody cared about me anyway!”
“Silence!” Gable barked, pointing a sharp, manicured finger at Emma. “You see? Incorrigible! She has no respect for authority!”
I stepped forward. Just one step.
The shift in the room was instantaneous. The air pressure seemed to drop. Gable’s arm froze in mid-air, her breath catching in her throat as she caught the look in my eyes. She had never seen a man look at her with such absolute, chilling lethality. She stumbled backward half a step, bumping into her chair.
“Do not raise your voice at my daughter again,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Not in this life.”
Vance sneered, trying to recover his composure. “Are you threatening my staff, Mr. Carter? Because if you are, I will have campus security drag you out into the street. You seem to forget who you are talking to. You are a guest in this institution. A barely tolerated one at that.”
“Call security,” I said calmly. “Call whoever you want. But first, look at this.”

I turned Emma slightly and pulled down the collar of her shirt, revealing the dark, sickening bruise spreading across her delicate skin.
