Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Rot

“You can’t arrest me!” Brenda Gable shrieked, scrambling out of her chair and retreating toward the wall. “Julian! Victoria! Tell them! I am an award-winning teacher! I have twenty years of service! I was disciplining a problem child!”
Victoria Sterling had squeezed herself into the corner of the office, desperately tapping on her phone screen. “I’m calling my husband. Richard is going to call the governor. You people cannot come into our school and terrorize us!”
“Mrs. Sterling,” Miller said coldly, without even looking at her. “Your husband Richard is currently being detained outside the front gates. Two minutes ago, the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, working in conjunction with the IRS and the Department of Justice, served a federal search warrant on the Sterling Development Group for bid-rigging and money laundering linked to state educational grants.”
Victoria’s phone slipped from her fingers, hitting the plush carpet with a dull thud.
The federal agent stepped up to Brenda Gable. With swift, practiced efficiency, he spun her around, pulled her arms behind her back, and clicked the cold steel handcuffs over her wrists.
“You’re hurting me!” Gable wailed, tears smearing her mascara. “Julian, do something!”
Vance couldn't do anything. He was clutching his chest, staring at the documents Miller had laid out.
“That’s not all, General,” Miller reported, looking at me. “Our cyber-response team seized the school’s digital surveillance servers ten minutes ago. Principal Vance attempted to execute a manual purge command on the server logs at fourteen-thirty hours—right after he called the local police.”
I walked over to Vance’s desk, placing both hands flat on the polished mahogany. I leaned in until my face was only inches from his.
“You tried to erase the security footage,” I whispered.
Vance’s lower lip quivered. “The... the cameras were malfunctioning... they often overwrite old data...”
“Our digital forensics team recovered the files in under three minutes, Vance,” Miller continued, pulling out a ruggedized tablet. “We have high-definition audio and video from the hallway outside room 104. We have footage of Mrs. Gable striking Emma across the back. We have footage of her dragging Emma by the arm through the south corridor while Emma screamed for help. And we have footage of Mrs. Gable throwing Emma into the equipment closet, slamming the door, and dropping the slide-latch while laughing with two passing students.”
The tablet screen played the clip.
Seeing it with my own eyes—seeing my tiny, motherless girl being shoved like a piece of trash into a pitch-black room—shattered whatever small mercy remained in my soul.
I reached out, took Vance by his expensive silk tie, and pulled him forward until his eyes were locked onto mine.
“You knew,” I said, my voice dead, quiet, and lethal. “This wasn’t the first time, was it?”
Vance’s eyes darted frantically toward the door, looking for anyone to rescue him. “It was... it was just behavioral management... the board approved the detention protocol...”
“Colonel Miller,” I commanded, releasing Vance’s tie with disgust.
“Sir!”
“Notify the State Department of Education. I want every single child in this facility interviewed by independent child-welfare advocates. If this woman put hands on my daughter, she has done it to others. And anyone on this staff who looked the other way is an accessory after the fact.”
“Already underway, General,” Miller replied. “State Police investigators have already sealed every classroom. No staff member leaves until interviews are concluded.”
Just then, the conference room door opened.
Captain Lin walked out, holding Emma’s hand. Emma looked calmer now, holding a small toy bear that the medic had produced from her tactical pack. But around Emma’s left shoulder, a medical bandage was clearly visible beneath her rebuttoned shirt.
“General,” Captain Lin said, her expression grim. “I have documented extensive soft-tissue contusions and early subcutaneous hematoma. The force applied was consistent with an adult striking a child with full weight. I strongly recommend transporting Emma to Walter Reed or the university medical center for a complete radiological scan to rule out hairline fractures.”
Emma looked at the handcuffed woman crying in the corner, then looked up at me.
“Daddy?” she whispered. “Is she going to jail?”
I walked over, knelt down, and took Emma into my arms.
May you like
“Yes, baby,” I said, kissing her temple. “She is never, ever going to hurt you or anyone else again.”
