Chapter 2 - The View from the Lobby

The elevator descent from the penthouse to the ground floor of the luxury high-rise took forty-two seconds. For forty-two seconds, neither of them spoke.

Emily stood beside Adrian, staring at their reflections in the polished brass walls of the elevator. In her vibrant emerald dress and heels, standing next to Adrian in his tailored dark suit, they didn't look like an employer and his housekeeper. They looked like a power structure.

"You don't have to do this," Adrian said quietly as the floor indicator ticked down to three. "You can go back up. My security team can handle this without a scene."

"No," Emily said, her chin lifting as she smoothed the fabric over her hips. "He lied to me. He made me feel like an idiot. I want to look him in the eye when he realizes he failed."

A faint, approving smirk tugged at the corner of Adrian's lips. "I knew there was a reason I hired you."

"You hired me because I reorganized your tax receipts by quarter and stopped your chef from putting garlic in your pre-meeting meals," she reminded him, though a small smile touched her own lips despite the nervous energy thrumming through her veins.

"That was why I hired you," Adrian admitted softly as the elevator slowed. "It's not why I kept you."

Before Emily could process the weight of that statement, the elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

The lobby of the building was a vast expanse of white marble, glass, and minimalist modern art. Sitting in one of the plush leather armchairs near the floor-to-ceiling glass entrance was Daniel Mercer—or Daniel Moretti. He looked dashing in a slim-fit dark blue suit, holding a small velvet box containing a bottle of high-end wine.

When the elevator doors opened, Daniel stood up, a warm, practiced smile spreading across his face.

"Emily, you look absolutely—"

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. His smile vanished as his eyes shifted from Emily to the massive figure walking beside her.

Adrian didn't look like a man coming down to say hello. He walked with the heavy, measured authority of an apex predator inspecting an intruder in his territory. Flanking the lobby doors were Frank and Lev, two of Adrian’s senior security operatives, their hands resting casually inside their tailored suit jackets.

"Daniel," Emily said, her voice steady, though her hands clutched her clutch purse tightly. "This is my employer, Adrian Kane."

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat moving nervously over his collar. The charming, effortless demeanor he had projected for the last four weeks evaporated, replaced by the instinctual terror of a low-level con man who realizes he has walked directly into a slaughterhouse.

"Mr. Kane," Daniel stammered, offering a quick, hesitant nod. "I... I was just picking Emily up for our dinner reservation. At Spiaggia."

"Cancel the reservation, Daniel," Adrian said, stopping three feet in front of him. Adrian towered over the younger man, his sheer physical presence reducing the grand marble lobby into a confined interrogation room.

"I... I beg your pardon?" Daniel tried to sound offended, looking at Emily for support. "Emily, what's going on here? Is this some kind of joke?"

"The only joke here is your identity, Mr. Moretti," Emily said, stepping forward until she was beside Adrian. "Or should I call you by the name on your Detroit driver's license?"

Daniel went completely pale. The bottle of wine in his hand wobbled slightly.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Daniel whispered, his eyes darting frantically toward the glass doors behind him.

"You owe three million dollars to the Marcone family in Detroit," Adrian stated smoothly, as if reciting the weather forecast. "You thought you could come to Chicago, seduce my house manager, use her to steal my private encryption keys, and pay off your debts with my capital."

"That's... that's absurd! Emily, he's lying to you! He's a mobster! You can't trust a word he says!" Daniel took a step toward Emily, reaching out a hand. "Come with me right now. I can explain everything—"

Before Daniel's hand could get within six inches of Emily, Adrian moved with terrifying speed.

He grabbed Daniel by the throat, his massive hand locking around the man's neck, and slammed him backward against the heavy marble pillar in the center of the lobby. The bottle of wine slipped from Daniel's fingers, shattering against the marble floor, spraying deep red liquid across the white stone like a spatter of blood.

Daniel gasped, his feet barely touching the floor as Adrian pinned him effortlessly.

"Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic little thief," Adrian growled, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You entered my city. You targeted my home. But worse than that... you made her doubt herself."

"Adrian, please..." Daniel choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Adrian's iron wrist.

"If I see your face in Chicago after midnight," Adrian whispered, leaning closer until his dark eyes were the only thing Daniel could see, "I won't just send you back to Detroit. I'll send you back in pieces small enough to fit in that wine bottle you just broke. Do you understand me?"

Daniel nodded frantically, tears of sheer terror welling in his eyes.

Adrian released his grip. Daniel collapsed onto the floor, coughing violently, clutching his throat as he scrambled backward away from Adrian.

"Frank. Lev," Adrian called out without looking back. "Escort Mr. Moretti to his vehicle. Make sure he finds the highway back to Michigan."

"Yes, boss," Frank said, stepping forward with Lev, gripping Daniel by his elbows and hauling him to his feet like a bag of laundry before dragging him out into the night.

The lobby returned to total silence, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the deep, heavy breathing of the man standing beside the pool of spilled wine.

Adrian straightened his cuffs, took a slow breath, and turned around to face Emily.
