Chapter 9 - The Fortress and the Home

By 3:00 PM, Adrian returned to the penthouse.
When the elevator doors opened into the living room, Emily was waiting. She was sitting on the sofa, wearing a comfortable oversized gray sweater and leggings, a cup of tea held tightly in her hands.
The moment she saw him walk in—unharmed, his charcoal suit immaculate—she set her tea down and stood up.
Adrian didn't say a word. He walked straight across the room, wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair.
Emily held him back just as fiercely, feeling the heavy release of tension in his muscular frame.
"It's over," Adrian murmured against her hair. "Marcone is on his way back to Detroit. Daniel Moretti is no longer our problem."
"And the snipers?" Emily asked softly, a faint, amused smile playing on her lips.
Adrian pulled back, looking down at her with surprise. "Frank told you?"
"Frank talks when he's nervous," Emily smiled, reaching up to smooth his lapels. "He said you set up a trap that would make a military general jealous."
"I did what was necessary to protect my home," Adrian said gently. He looked around the vast, luxurious penthouse—the white marble, the floor-to-ceiling glass, the high-end artwork—and then looked back down at the woman standing in his arms. "For eleven months, this place was just a fortress. A clean, secure box where I slept and worked."
He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing her jaw.
"You made it a home, Emily," he said softly. "And I am never going back to living in a fortress alone."
Emily felt a deep, overwhelming warmth flood her chest. The insecurities that had plagued her for years—the feeling of taking up too much space, of being inadequate or unlovable—vanished like mist under a bright sun.

"I'm not going anywhere, Adrian," she said softly, leaning up to press her lips firmly against his. "You're stuck with me. And I'm still going to charge you extra for managing your schedule."
Adrian laughed—that deep, rich sound that warmed the entire room—and pulled her into a long, passionate kiss.
