Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

"Security!"

The sharp, commanding voice of Detective Cruz shattered the toxic standoff in the hallway.

She marched down the corridor alongside two burly hospital security guards, her service weapon resting securely on her hip, her face dark with fury.

"Ma'am, step away from Mr. Vance immediately," Cruz ordered, positioning herself directly between me and Evelyn. "You are violating an active police perimeter around a protected minor. Step back, or you will be arrested for witness intimidation."

Evelyn smoothed the front of her designer coat, her aristocratic mask sliding seamlessly back into place. "I am this child's grandmother, officer. I have every right to check on her well-being."

"You have no rights here," Cruz countered coldly. "An emergency protective order was signed by Judge Alvarez twenty minutes ago. You, Richard Vance, and Bethany Vance are legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of Julian Vance or Rosie Vance. Guards, escort this woman off hospital grounds. If she steps foot on this property again before the hearing, book her."

The two security guards took Evelyn firmly by the elbows. She didn't fight them, but as she was turned toward the exit, she cast one final, chilling look over her shoulder at me.

"Tick-tock, Julian," she whispered.

Once they were gone, the heavy silence of the corridor descended again. I leaned back against the wall, my knees trembling, sliding down until I was sitting on the cold floor, my head buried in my hands.

The room was spinning.

*Sarah.*

The memory of that horrifying night four years ago clawed at my mind. The flashing monitors, the sudden alarms, the blood, the sheer blinding terror of watching the love of my life slipping away while doctors shouted medical jargon I couldn't comprehend. I remembered the clipboard being shoved into my hands. I remembered screaming for Sarah’s personal doctor, weeping, begging them to tell me what was happening.

Did I hesitate? Did my shock cost Sarah the critical minutes she needed to survive?

Had my father truly buried a malpractice report just to keep a leash around my neck?

"Mr. Vance?"

Detective Cruz knelt down in front of me, her voice gentle, stripping away the harsh authority she had used with my mother.

"Don't listen to her," Cruz said quietly. "Abusers and their enablers always rewrite history when they’re cornered. They find the deepest, most painful wound you have, and they pour salt into it to make you doubt your own sanity."

I looked up at her, my vision blurry with unshed tears. "What if she’s telling the truth? What if my father really has those documents?"

"Then we pull the original, uncorrupted state medical examiner's records," Cruz replied firmly. "Your father may have money, Mr. Vance, but he doesn't own the entire state infrastructure. Detective Miller is at the precinct right now processing Bethany. And you need to see this."

She pulled an evidence tablet from her satchel and unlocked the screen.

"We executed the search warrant at Crestview Terrace an hour ago," Cruz explained, tapping a video file. "Your father tried to burn the car lighter in the fireplace, just like your brother said. But he was too late. The crime scene techs recovered it before the heat could completely incinerate the biological residue."

She hit play.

On the screen, a high-resolution forensic photograph appeared. It was an antique brass car lighter, its handle shaped into a screaming eagle. The round heating element was blackened, but clear traces of charred textile fibers were fused to the coil.

"The crime lab did a rapid presumptive test," Cruz said, her voice dropping into a solemn, heavy cadence. "The melted fibers match the synthetic blend of Rosie’s pale blue star hoodie. And they found epithelial tissue—skin cells—on the rim. We have the weapon, Julian. Bethany’s fingerprints are all over the brass casing. Your father’s prints are on the handle from when he threw it into the grate. We have them dead to rights on felony aggravated child abuse, evidence tampering, and felony obstruction."

A massive shudder ran through my chest. The physical evidence was undeniable. No high-priced country club lawyer could explain away Rosie’s burnt clothes fused to the element.

"What about Bethany?" I asked, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. "Is she in custody?"

Cruz’s expression tightened, a shadow passing over her eyes.

"She was," Cruz said carefully. "Her cheekbone had a hairline fracture from your strike. The officers processed her at the urgent care center, took her mugshot, and transported her to the central county jail."

"So why do you look worried?"

Cruz sighed, glancing back toward Rosie’s hospital room before speaking in a low, guarded whisper.

"Because thirty minutes after she was booked, Judge Harold Vance—your father’s first cousin—signed an emergency bail reduction order without a scheduled hearing. Richard posted the fifty-thousand-dollar cash bond before the ink was even dry."

My heart plummeted into my stomach like lead.

"She’s out?" I choked out, pure panic seizing my throat. "She’s already out on the street?"

"She has an ankle monitor," Cruz tried to reassure me, though the lack of confidence in her own voice was terrifyingly obvious. "And the protective order is fully active. If she comes within five hundred yards of you or this hospital, the tracker alerts dispatch instantly."

"A tracker doesn't stop a bullet! It doesn't stop a crazy woman with a grudge and my father’s unlimited bank account!" I stood up, pacing the hallway like a caged animal. "They’re not going to let this go to trial, Cruz! You heard my mother! They are going to obliterate me!"

At that exact moment, my phone chimed.

It wasn't a call. It was an alert from a local community news app, followed immediately by an influx of notifications from Facebook and Instagram.

I looked down at the glowing screen.

A viral post was tearing through our city's social media channels, shared by thousands within the last forty minutes.

The headline screamed:

**"LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST’S DAUGHTER BRUTALLY ASSAULTED BY UNSTABLE BROTHER: Julian Vance on the Run After Violent Rampage at Family Birthday Party."**

Below the headline was a photograph of Bethany sitting in an emergency room bed, wearing a neck brace, her eye blackened, weeping into the camera while my father stood beside her looking grim and heartbroken.

The caption read:

*"Tonight, our family endured an unspeakable tragedy. My son, Julian Vance, who has struggled with severe, untreated psychiatric delusions and substance abuse since the death of his wife, violently attacked his younger sister Bethany, fracturing her face and terrorizing our home. In his paranoid frenzy, he abducted his young daughter, Rosie, who requires urgent medical monitoring. We plead with the public: if you see Julian, do not approach. Call police immediately. Help us bring Rosie home safely."*

The comments underneath were already exploding by the hundreds.

*"Monster! How could he hit a woman like that?!"*

*"Look at her face! He almost killed her!"*

*"Find that little girl before he hurts her too!"*

*"Isn't that the Vance family? They donate millions to the children's shelter! He must be completely deranged!"*

The smear campaign hadn't just begun.

It was already winning.
