Chapter 5 - Reclaiming Her Voice

The corridor smelled of ozone, cordite, and copper.

Alexander moved like an apparition through the shadows, checking corners with fluid, lethal precision. I trailed three paces behind him, both hands clamped around the grip of the pistol, my back pressed against the wood-paneled wall. Every shadow seemed to twist with violent intent.

Another suppressed shot hissed through the air. A bullet chewed through the plaster inches above my head, spraying white dust across my hair.

Alexander spun, his weapon barking twice in rapid succession. A man dressed in tactical black collapsed out of a recessed doorway at the end of the hall, his rifle clattering against the hardwood floor.

"Move," Alexander commanded, grabbing my wrist—gently, mindfully—and pulling me toward the secondary stairwell. "They’re sweeping the second floor. Marco is engaging them in the main foyer, but they’ve breached the rear."

We took the spiral iron stairs downward, bypassing the smoke-filled foyer where the deafening staccato of automatic gunfire echoed. As we reached the ground level service corridor, a door kicked open directly in front of us.

A massive man with a balaclava covering his face lunged forward, leveling a submachine gun straight at Alexander’s chest.

Alexander reacted instantly, deflecting the barrel with his left forearm as a burst of rounds chewed into the ceiling. The two men collided with brutal force, slamming into the concrete wall of the service hall. The intruder was younger, heavier, and drove a combat knife toward Alexander’s neck.

Alexander blocked the blade with his wrist, but the sheer momentum drove him to one knee. The attacker raised the knife again, his full body weight pressing down, preparing to drive the steel into Alexander’s throat.

My mind went completely blank.

The world slowed to a crawl. I saw Alexander straining, his jaw clenched, blood trickling from a cut above his brow where the man's helmet had clipped him. If Alexander fell, I was Derek’s prisoner again. I was the drugged woman in the white room, screaming into silence until I died.

*No.*

I raised the heavy pistol with both hands, planting my feet the way I had read in Derek’s discarded gun manuals.

"Get off him!" I screamed.

The intruder glanced toward me, his cold eyes crinkling with brief, dismissive amusement behind his mask—assuming a terrified socialite wouldn't dare.

I pulled the trigger.

The recoil kicked hard through my wrists, the deafening report echoing like a cannon in the narrow corridor.

The bullet struck the man square in the shoulder blade. He roared in agony, his grip on the knife breaking as the impact threw him off balance.

Alexander didn't hesitate. With terrifying, predatory speed, he seized the opening, driving the heel of his palm upward into the man’s chin, followed by a vicious twist of the attacker's neck. A sickening snap resonated through the hall.

The man went limp, crashing to the floor like a sack of wet cement.

Heavy silence slammed back down over the corridor, broken only by my ragged, wheezing gasps and the distant sound of approaching sirens.

Alexander rose slowly. He adjusted his cuffs, ignoring the blood smeared across his cheek, and looked down at the dead mercenary, then up at me.

Smoke was still curling from the barrel of the gun in my trembling hands.

He walked over to me, his boots crunching over spent shell casings. He didn't take the weapon away. He gently placed his hand over mine, lowering the barrel toward the floor.

"You hesitated for zero seconds," Alexander said, his voice quiet, vibrating with something that sounded remarkably like awe.

"He was going to kill you," I whispered, tears of shock stinging my eyes.

"And you decided he wouldn't." Alexander reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a streak of drywall dust from my cheek. His touch lingered, his gray eyes burning with an intense, fierce heat. "You are not a victim hiding under a desk anymore, Emily. Remember this feeling. This is what power tastes like."

Ten minutes later, the estate was flooded with flashing red and blue lights.

Marco, clutching a bandaged shoulder but grinning fiercely, stood by the entrance as three unmarked black sedans pulled up behind the police cruisers. But the police didn't arrest anyone. Instead, a silver-haired man in a federal suit stepped out, shook Alexander’s hand, and immediately began directing the cleanup.

Alexander stood on the front steps, his arm securely around my shoulders, sheltering me from the driving rain as the bodies were loaded into private vans.

"Derek made a tactical error," Alexander said, watching the flashing lights reflect off the wet pavement. "He used Bratva guns on American soil to attack my home. He has given me the legal, political, and physical justification to destroy everything he touches."

He looked down at me, the rain glistening in his blond hair.

May you like

"Tomorrow night is the annual Maritime Commerce Gala at the Drake Hotel," Alexander said, a lethal smile touching his lips. "Derek expects you to be dead or in chains. Instead, you are going to attend. On my arm."
