Chapter 8 - The Siege and the Trap

Midnight. The south docks rail yard was a graveyard of rusted boxcars, weed-choked tracks, and rotting industrial warehouses. Fog rolled off Lake Michigan, wrapping the skeletal cranes in thick, ghostly tendrils.

A solitary spotlight illuminated a cleared expanse of concrete between two rows of shipping containers.

I walked forward into the light, my footsteps echoing against the wet asphalt. I wore a long dark trench coat, my hair pulled back, holding a leather portfolio in my left hand.

Twenty yards ahead of me, tied to a wooden chair beneath the spotlight, was Father Thomas. His cassock was torn, his silver hair matted with blood, but his eyes were clear, whispering silent prayers as the wind whipped his robes.

Standing behind him was Derek. He looked feral—his hair greasy, his eyes bloodshot, wearing an oversized winter jacket with a heavy Colt .45 gripped tightly in his trembling hand. Half a dozen Bratva mercenaries, armed with assault rifles, lingered in the shadows of the containers.

"Stop right there!" Derek screamed, leveling his gun at me. "Drop the portfolio!"

I stopped. I gently set the leather folder on the damp concrete.

"It's all there, Derek," I called out, my voice steady against the howling wind. "The full release of the trust, the deed to the terminal leases, and the account transfer codes. Untraceable offshore routing. Forty million dollars. Let the priest go."

Derek laughed—a high-pitched, hysterical cackle that bounced off the steel containers. "You actually did it. You stupid, naive bitch. You thought I was going to let either of you walk out of here alive?"

From the shadows, Nikolai Volkov stepped forward, massive and stone-faced, holding a heavy automatic pistol. "Is the transfer verified?"

"Check the portfolio, Nikolai!" Derek shouted eagerly, licking his chapped lips. "It’s all there! Now kill the priest, kill her, and we can be on the cargo boat to Panama before dawn!"

Volkov walked forward, bending down to pick up the portfolio. He unzipped it.

Inside was not a stack of legal contracts.

Inside was a high-grade military transponder blinking with a rapid, rhythmic red light.

Volkov froze. "What is this?"

"That," I said softly, stepping backward into the mist, "is a target designator."

From the darkness of the surrounding cranes, a deafening crack shattered the night.

Volkov’s head snapped back as a high-caliber sniper round tore through his chest, dropping the massive Russian like a felled tree.

Instantly, the rail yard erupted into chaos.

"Ambush!" a mercenary screamed, raising his rifle.

Before the trigger could be pulled, four smoke canisters exploded around the perimeter, bathing the concrete in thick, blinding phosphorus clouds. The synchronized bark of suppressed weapons hissed through the fog. Marco and Alexander’s elite strike team swept in from the flanks, cutting down the disoriented Bratva guards with surgical efficiency.

Derek panicked. He grabbed Father Thomas by the collar, dragging the old man back toward an open boxcar, screaming curses into the smoke.

"Emily!" a voice commanded through the haze.

Alexander materialized at my side like a shadow, clad in tactical gear, his rifle raised. He grabbed my arm, shielding my body with his own as stray rounds pinged off the metal containers above us.

"Thomas is in the boxcar," I shouted over the noise. "Derek has him!"

"Stay behind me!" Alexander ordered, moving forward with lethal intent.

We pushed through the thinning smoke to the open freight car. Inside, Derek was backed into a corner, holding Father Thomas in front of him as a human shield, the barrel of his gun pressed hard against the old priest's temple.

"Get back!" Derek shrieked, saliva flying from his lips. "Drop the guns, Moretti, or I swear to God I’ll paint this wall with his brains!"

Alexander stopped at the threshold of the boxcar, slowly lowering his rifle to his side. "The Bratva are dead, Derek. Volkov is dead. You are holding a priest with an empty magazine."

"You're lying!" Derek screamed, his eyes rolling wildly.

"Count your shots," Alexander said calmly, taking a slow step forward. "You fired two into the air when the smoke hit. You fired three at Marco’s team. Your Colt holds seven rounds. You have one in the chamber. You shoot him, and Emily walks away unharmed while I take my time tearing you to pieces."

Derek’s gaze darted to me, then back to Alexander. The realization of his absolute, inescapable doom settled over him like a suffocating shroud.

His eyes locked onto me, burning with venomous, undiluted hatred.

"If I'm going to hell," Derek snarled, pivoting the gun away from Father Thomas and aiming directly at my chest, "I'm taking you with me!"

The gun didn't fire. A misfeed. The slide jammed half an inch out of battery.

Derek stared at the jammed weapon in horrified disbelief.

In that heartbeat, Father Thomas threw his weight backward, knocking Derek off balance.

Alexander lunged forward like a striking serpent, his fist connecting with Derek’s jaw with bone-crushing force. Derek smashed against the corrugated steel wall of the boxcar, his weapon skittering across the floor, before collapsing onto his hands and knees, spitting blood and shattered teeth.

Marco rushed into the car, quickly cutting the priest's bonds and helping the shaken older man to his feet. "I have him, boss. He’s safe."

"Take him to the transport," Alexander commanded without looking back.

The boxcar cleared, leaving only Alexander, Derek, and me in the dimly lit metal container.

Derek groaned, clutching his broken jaw, staring up at us with the pathetic, sniveling terror of a defeated bully.

Alexander bent down, retrieved Derek’s fallen weapon, cleared the jammed round with a sharp flick of his wrist, and held the loaded gun out to me.

"He tried to take your life," Alexander said softly, his eyes boring into mine with absolute solemnity. "He tried to destroy your soul. The choice is yours, Emily. She decides."
