Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Yellow Gloves

The harsh scraping sound of a cheap rolling suitcase echoed through the quiet streets of the city’s wealthiest private neighborhood, a discordant rhythm against the backdrop of absolute luxury.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

It sounded painfully out of place against the elegant stone walkways, manicured lawns, and perfectly sculpted hedges surrounding the sprawling Hawthorne estate.

Emily Carter kept her head down and forced her legs to move forward. She refused to look back at the towering wrought-iron gates she had just passed through. If she turned around now, the fragile thread of pride she still possessed might snap completely beneath the blazing afternoon sun. She was still wearing her dark blue maid uniform, and the bright yellow rubber cleaning gloves she had forgotten to strip off remained stuck to her trembling hands.

They had thrown her out so quickly, with such violent efficiency, that she hadn't even been given five minutes to change her clothes or pack her personal belongings properly.

"Leave. Right now."

Richard Hawthorne’s voice still rang in her ears, cold, final, and merciless.

Richard Hawthorne—billionaire tech mogul, Silicon Valley titan, and one of the most powerful, influential men in the country. To the public, he was a visionary genius who built the infrastructure of modern communication. To Emily, he was simply an absentee father who lived behind a fortress of glass, marble, and emotional isolation.

For three years, Emily had worked inside his mansion as a head housekeeper, enduring the stifling atmosphere without a single complaint or disciplinary mark. She had scrubbed floors, managed the estate’s chaotic logistics, and quietly absorbed the heavy, crushing loneliness that permeated every corner of the house.

Tears rolled freely down her face now, hot and bitter, mixing with sweat as she dragged her worn suitcase toward the public bus stop down the block.

But she wasn't crying because she had just lost her livelihood.

And she wasn't crying because she had been publicly, humiliatingly accused of theft by Richard’s ambitious, social-climbing fiancée, Victoria Lane.

She was crying because she had just been forced to abandon the only three souls in that mausoleum who made her life worth living.

Ethan.

Noah.

Liam.

The five-year-old triplets. They had lost their mother on the operating table the day they were born, and over the past three years, they had slowly come to depend on Emily as the only source of genuine warmth, comforting bedtime stories, and unconditional love inside the cold, silent mansion.

And now, she was gone.
