Chapter 4 - The Secret the Boys Carried

For weeks, the triplets had been keeping a secret—a terrifying, suffocating secret that adults in the house were too blind, too busy, or too self-absorbed to notice.

It started on a rainy Tuesday afternoon when Noah had wandered down to the East Wing service pantry looking for a glass of water. The pantry door had been slightly ajar, and through the crack, Noah had witnessed something that had haunted his nightmares ever since.

He had seen Victoria Lane standing by the service counter, opening the household medication locker with a small brass key she had somehow acquired. He watched in silent horror as she crushed a small, bitter-tasting white pill into a fine powder and mixed it directly into the specialized evening vitamin tonic that Richard drank every single night before bed.

Noah hadn't understood what the pill was, but he knew medicine wasn't supposed to be slipped into a drink in secret.

Terrified, he had run straight to Emily’s quarters that night and whispered the entire story into her apron.

Emily had gone completely pale. She immediately recognized the danger. Through quiet inquiries and careful observation over the following days, Emily discovered that Victoria was systematically poisoning Richard’s evening tonic with a slow-acting synthetic sedative designed to induce severe cognitive fog, memory loss, and eventual neurological decline—all so Victoria could legally declare him incapacitated, seize control of his multi-billion-dollar tech empire through prenuptial proxy clauses, and lock him away in a private sanitarium.

Emily had gathered hard proof: a discarded prescription bottle she found hidden in the guest suite wastebasket, along with a notebook detailing dates and dosages. She had hidden the evidence safely inside the lining of her canvas cleaning bag, planning to confront Richard with the absolute truth the very next morning.

She never got the chance.

Victoria had discovered Emily snooping around the guest suite, panicked, and immediately orchestrated the theft setup to frame Emily, discredit her, and have her thrown off the property before the truth could come to light.

Now, Emily was walking down the city street with her suitcase, completely unaware that she had left her canvas bag—containing the life-saving evidence—sitting quietly on the bottom shelf of the mudroom closet.

And upstairs in the playroom, the triplets realized that with Emily gone, their father was completely, utterly defenseless against the monster living under his roof.

Ethan stood up, his small fists clenched at his sides. "We have to tell him."

"He won't listen," Noah said, his voice shaking. "He shouted at Emily. He hates us when we interrupt his meetings."

"We have to," Liam cried out, tears streaming down his cheeks. "If we don't stop her, she's going to hurt Papa like she hurt the birds in the garden!"

The boys remembered the injured sparrow they had found behind the greenhouse last month—its wing broken after drinking from the decorative fountain where Victoria had been cleaning her gardening tools.

Without another word, Ethan grabbed the doorknob, twisted it open, and bolted out of the playroom. Noah and Liam scrambled after him, their small sneakers pounding frantically against the polished hardwood floors of the grand hallway.
