Chapter 5 - The Restitution of the Estate

By Wednesday afternoon, the dark, oppressive tension that had hung over our lives had completely dissolved beneath the bright autumn sunshine.

The cramped carriage house where I had spent eighteen months watching the window in terror was permanently retired.

The grand south residential pavilion of the Valente estate—a sprawling, six-bedroom private wing overlooking the rose gardens and the private yacht slipways—had been completely renovated into a sunlit, peaceful sanctuary for Sophie and me.

I walked onto the wide stone terrace wearing an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a warm cup of Earl Grey tea.

Sitting on a soft woolen rug beneath the shade of ancient oak trees, playing with a set of hand-carved wooden sailboats, was three-year-old Sophie. She was laughing as her white rabbit sat perched on the miniature deck of the largest boat, sailing across the grass.

Dominic Valente walked onto the stone terrace, dressed in a comfortable dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying two crystal glasses of fresh raspberry lemonade.

He walked over to where I stood, resting his large, warm hand over mine on the stone balustrade, looking into my eyes with deep, unreserved reverence.

"The federal court formally unsealed the David Vance memorial exoneration at noon today, Elena," Dominic said softly, his slate-gray eyes warm with unshakeable peace. "His name has been permanently cleared, and the state has awarded his estate full restitution."

Tears of profound, sacred vindication welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had torn down his own family's corruption to protect my child.

"You gave my husband back his honor, Dominic," I whispered, resting my hand over his.

"You gave me back my soul, Elena," Dominic answered, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them with boundless tenderness. "You and Sophie gave this house a future."

Sophie came running across the flagstones, her steps light, fast, and completely fearless, throwing her arms around both of our legs with a joyful laugh that echoed across the bay like music.
