Chapter 9 - The Dedication of the Harbor Park

One year after the wedding, the morning sun broke over the newly completed David Vance Memorial Waterfront Park and Maritime Learning Center on the shores of Newark Bay.

The once-corrupt industrial parcel where Marcus Thorne had planned to build private holding warehouses had been permanently transformed into a sixty-acre public sanctuary with walking trails, community piers, a maritime training academy for dockworkers, and a state-of-the-art pediatric clinic.

In the center of the grand promenade stood a bronze monument depicting a surveyor looking out over the harbor, with a bronze plaque inscribed with words that would endure for generations:

THE SOVEREIGN TIDE

Dedicated to the Unconquerable Integrity of David Vance and the Fearless Truth of Sophie Vance-Valente.

“No Darkness Can Conceal What Love Was Born to Protect.”

Over eight hundred dockworkers in tailored suits, harbor engineers, pediatric nurses, and community families were gathered around cedar banquet tables on the lawn, enjoying a feast of wood-fired barbecue and fresh sourdough breads.

Six-year-old Sophie was running along the pier, holding her father's hand as they watched a massive container vessel enter the channel under the morning sun.

Arthur Ross walked up the stone steps beside Dominic, holding two crystal glasses of sparkling cider.

"A magnificent legacy, Dominic," Arthur smiled, clinking his glass against his. "The terminal consortium cleared record quarterly earnings, the worker pension fund is fully endowed for seventy years, and the foundation has already provided housing and legal defense for five hundred working families this year."

"It is a true home, Arthur," Dominic replied softly, watching Sophie laugh. "Built on the truth."
