Chapter 1 - The Glass Slipper and the Cheap Suit

The summer breeze rolling off Lake Minnetonka smelled of grilled wagyu beef, expensive white wine, and the unmistakable stench of manufactured superiority. I stood on the edge of the sprawling stone patio of my former home—a home I had designed, landscaped, and paid for during the first five years of my marriage—holding a glass of sparkling water that I had no intention of drinking.

Around me, the neighborhood elite chatted in hushed, polite tones, their designer linen outfits gleaming under the golden glow of string lights. It was the annual charity gala for the local arts foundation, an event I had hosted for six consecutive years. But tonight, I wasn't the hostess. I was an invited guest. Or rather, a tolerated specter.

Six months ago, my ex-husband, Richard Sterling, had traded me in for a newer model. Her name was Brittany, she was twenty-four, possessed the personality of a wet cardboard box, and served as his corporate secretary at Sterling Wealth Management. The divorce had been swift, brutal, and designed to strip me of everything. Richard had used his high-priced legal team to freeze our joint accounts, forcing me out of the house with little more than my sedan and my savings account. He wanted me broken. He wanted me begging.

Instead, I had spent the last six months rebuilding my life from a modest two-bedroom apartment across town, pouring all my energy into my freelance forensic accounting firm. I wasn't rich, but I was free.

Then came the invitation. Richard had personally sent it, hand-delivered by a courier to my apartment door with a handwritten note scrawled in his aggressive, blocky handwriting: “Come see how the adults live now, Clover. Bring a date. Try not to look too pathetic.”

I hadn’t planned on going. But when a tall, broad-shouldered man with a midnight-blue bespoke suit and eyes the color of a stormy winter sea knocked on my apartment door an hour before the gala, introducing himself as Daniel Cross and calmly stating that he was my date for the evening, everything changed. Daniel had a quiet, unshakeable gravity about him—the kind of presence that made you instinctively stand up straighter.

Now, standing beside him on the patio, I felt a strange sense of calm. Daniel hadn't spoken much during the drive over, but his hand resting lightly against the small of my back offered an anchor of absolute, unwavering stability.

"Well, look who decided to grace us with her presence," a booming, arrogant voice cut through the murmur of the crowd.

The chatter died down instantly. All eyes turned toward the center of the patio.

Richard Sterling stood there, a glass of vintage scotch in one hand, his arm draped casually around Brittany’s waist. Brittany wore a blinding, sequined crimson dress that looked like it belonged in a Las Vegas lounge act, and she was already half-inebriated on champagne. Richard’s gaze swept over me, lingering mockingly on my understated emerald silk dress before landing on Daniel.

A cruel, smug smirk twisted Richard’s thin lips. He raised his scotch glass, letting out a sharp, patronizing bark of laughter that echoed off the stone walls.

"Did you rent an actor from an agency to look desirable, Clover?" Richard barked across the crowded patio, his voice dripping with venomous amusement, humiliating me in front of our friends while Brittany giggled shrilly beside him.

The whole party froze in secondhand embarrassment. Several society matrons lowered their gaze, murmuring behind their fans, while Richard puffed out his chest, basking in the cruel spotlight he had just manufactured.
