Chapter 5 - The Beachfront Mirage

"There's more, Mr. Sterling," Daniel said, stepping forward with a crisp manila folder extracted from one of the Pelican cases. He didn't even look at Brittany as she bolted; his focus was entirely fixed on the trembling wreck of a man standing before him.

Richard swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He stared at the manila folder as if it were a venomous snake. "What... what else could there possibly be? The accounts are frozen..."

"The accounts are frozen, yes," Daniel agreed, flipping open the folder to reveal a series of high-resolution satellite photographs and property deeds. "But a federal forensic audit doesn't stop at corporate ledgers. We follow the liquidity trail wherever it leads."

Daniel pulled out a photograph and held it up for the surrounding crowd to see. It showed a sprawling, ultra-modern glass-and-steel beachfront villa perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos.

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered elite. Several local businessmen who had invested heavily in Sterling Wealth Management leaned forward, their eyes wide with horror.

"Recognize this, Richard?" Daniel asked, his tone dripping with quiet sarcasm. "Property parcel number 402-B, Ocean Drive, Providenciales. Purchased six months ago for four point two million dollars. Cash."

Richard let out a strangled, breathless sound. "That... that's an investment property for the firm's offshore holding portfolio..."

"It’s registered under a revocable trust bearing your personal social security number and your mother’s maiden name," Daniel corrected sharply, pulling out a second document—a certified bank transfer receipt. "Purchased entirely with funds diverted from the city of Minneapolis firefighter pension fund. Four million, two hundred thousand dollars of public servant retirement money traded for a tropical view."

The murmurs among the guests transformed into outright fury.

General Marcus Vance, a retired army officer and one of the largest investors in Richard’s firm, stepped out from the front row of the crowd. His face was purple with rage.

"You stole from the firefighters, Sterling?!" General Vance roared, his voice booming across the stone patio like a cannon shot. "My son is a captain in that department! You lying, thieving parasite!"

Before Richard could formulate a defense, General Vance lunged forward, not to strike him, but to rip the expensive silk lapel of Richard’s custom tuxedo. "Federal marshals! Arrest this criminal right now!"

The two federal agents who had accompanied Daniel didn't wait for a second invitation. They moved with the silent, lightning-fast precision of apex predators. In one fluid motion, they closed the distance, wrenched Richard’s arms behind his back, and snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with two sharp, metallic clicks.

Clack. Clack.

Richard shrieked as he was slammed face-first against the edge of the stone patio balustrade, his expensive shoes kicking helplessly against the flagstones.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?! I’ll sue the Justice Department! I’ll—" Richard’s protests dissolved into pathetic, muffled whimpers as the marshals shoved him toward the waiting unmarked federal vehicles parked by the fountain.
