Chapter 2 - The Unseen Shift

The four simple words hung in the heavy, ozonated air of Apex Martial Arts Academy as if someone had dropped a live grenade onto the puzzle mats.

You wanna fight?

For three terrifying seconds, Master Vince Sterling stood frozen. The absolute confidence that had sustained his ego for a decade seemed to curdle in his chest. He looked at the fifty-two-year-old woman holding a wooden mop handle—at her faded gray hoodie, her worn canvas shoes, her tired silver hair—and an instinctive, primal alarm bell screamed inside his brain. It was a bizarre, illogical panic, the kind of nervous system reaction a seasoned fighter feels when staring down an opponent whose danger rating is entirely off the charts.

Then reality slammed back into place. Vince was a master of competitive combat, a heavyweight champion of the regional circuit, a man who charged three hundred dollars an hour for private instruction. The woman before him was a tired cleaning lady pushing a bucket of dirty water.

Vance’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, humiliated that he had even flinched for a fraction of a second in front of his students.

"Are you out of your mind, you crazy old hag?" Vince barked, his voice booming with forced bravado as he recovered his footing, gesturing wildly toward the exit. "You must have inhaled too many chemical fumes from that bucket! Get out of my academy before I have the police trespass you for psychiatric evaluation!"

Clara didn't blink. She didn't flinch at the insult. She simply let out a quiet, gravelly sigh, relaxed her grip on the mop handle, and slowly shook her head.

"You talk too much, boy," Clara murmured, her voice carrying a dry, dismissive weight. "A real fighter doesn't need a microphone."

Without waiting for another word, Clara turned her back on the head instructor, dropped her mop back into the gray water, and wheeled her cleaning cart down the service hallway toward the supply closet, her canvas shoes squeaking softly against the floor.

Vance stood rooted to the spot, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Crazy," he muttered loudly to the room, forcing a harsh, mocking laugh to save face in front of his class. "Absolute lunatic. Alright, class dismissed! Hit the showers, and Chad—stick around to help me lock up the heavy bags."

As the students began packing their gear and murmuring quietly among themselves about the bizarre confrontation, Chad Miller walked over to Vince, a smug grin plastered across his face.

"Man, you should have just thrown her out on her ear, Sensei," Chad chuckled, flexing his biceps. "Old lady was probably off her meds. Want me to go give her a shove toward the door?"

"No," Vince snapped, rubbing the back of his neck where a strange, persistent chill still lingered. "Just finish locking down the ring area. And someone call the cleaning agency tomorrow morning. Tell them I want a different crew. I never want to see that woman in my academy again."
