Chapter 4 - The Morning Confrontation

By ten-thirty, the morning beginner class was in full swing. Thirty teenagers and middle-aged professionals were kicking heavy bags and practicing basic roundhouse combinations under the watchful eye of Vince Sterling.

Chad Miller stood near the edge of the mat, holding the leather-bound photo album against his chest like a shield, his face pale and sweating despite the cool air conditioning. He waited anxiously for the water break, shifting his weight nervously from foot to foot.

"Sensei," Chad blurted out the moment Vince called a thirty-second rest period, jogging over to his instructor with wide, panicked eyes.

Vance wiped the sweat from his forehead with a towel, glaring at his senior student. "What is it, Chad? Can't you see I'm in the middle of a class?"

"Sensei, you... you need to see this," Chad stammered, flipping open the photo album and thrusting the Prague championship clipping directly into Vince’s face. "Look at this. Look at the name. Look at the photo."

Vance frowned, annoyed, and snatched the paper from Chad’s hands. "What is this trash? I told you to clean up the back office—"

He stopped.

His eyes scanned the headline: "THE AMBER GHOST: CLARA VOSKOV."

Then his gaze dropped to the photograph. The young woman on the silver podium—fierce, unyielding, holding the terrifying reputation of an apex predator—stared back at him.

Vance’s face went from ruddy pink to a sickly, chalky white in less than a second. The air seemed to vanish from his lungs. He remembered the amber eyes. He remembered the cold, terrifying calm in her voice when she asked him, “You wanna fight?”

"No," Vince whispered, his voice pitching into a panicked, disbelieving gasp. "No, this... this has to be a coincidence. She's... she's a cleaner! She's fifty-two years old! She pushes a bucket!"

"Sensei, she retired twenty years ago!" Chad hissed frantically, pointing at the text. "My uncle remembers her! He said she was banned from three international circuits because her spinning back-kick literally shattered an opponent's floating rib! She was known as the most ruthless striker in Europe!"

Vance’s knees buckled slightly. He gripped the edge of the reception desk to keep from falling. A cold wave of nausea washed over him. He had just publicly humiliated, insulted, and ordered a martial arts demigod out of his own academy—an icon who could have folded him like a lawn chair in under ten seconds.

"Where is she?" Vince demanded, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "Did she call the agency? Did she report me?!"

Before Chad could answer, the heavy glass double doors of the academy slid open.

A familiar figure stepped inside out of the morning chill. She wasn't wearing her cleaning hoodie today; she wore a simple, dark wool overcoat, comfortable walking boots, and a knitted gray scarf. Over her shoulder, she carried a battered leather gym bag that looked older than most of the students in the room.

Clara Voskov walked slowly across the polished hardwood floor, her amber eyes scanning the mats with calm, effortless poise.

Every single student in the academy froze, sensing the sudden, suffocating shift in the room's atmosphere, even if they didn't know why.

Vance swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone, and took three trembling steps forward to intercept her before she reached the mats.
