Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Lockdown

At seven o'clock the following morning, the thirty-second floor of the Rossi Maritime Center in Lower Manhattan was placed under executive quarantine.
The grand boardroom, enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the gray expanse of New York Harbor, was packed with the twelve members of the board of directors, four high-priced corporate defense attorneys, and the senior captains who controlled the five transport districts of the eastern seaboard.
Victoria Rossi sat at the head of the conference table, dressed in a sharp black tailored suit, her diamond brooch catching the morning light. She had spent the night making frantic phone calls to her political allies in Albany, attempting to orchestrate an emergency shareholder vote to declare Leo mentally unstable following his daughter’s 'accident.'
Beside her sat Harrison Cole, the corrupt probate attorney whose voice had been captured on the security recordings.
"Gentlemen," Victoria announced, slamming her gold pen onto the mahogany table. "We are convening this emergency assembly under Section 14 of the corporate bylaws. My stepson, Leo Rossi, has suffered a severe psychological decompensation. Last night, he threatened my life and unlawfully detained staff members on the estate. For the stability of our ninety-million-dollar European port merger, I move that we immediately appoint a temporary executive committee to oversee all voting shares."
Harrison Cole stood up, opening his leather portfolio with theatrical gravity. "The probate filings are prepared. Under the authority of Don Antonio’s supplementary estate memorandum—"
The heavy double mahogany doors of the boardroom were kicked open with concussive force.
The four private security guards at the door were shoved aside as Leo Rossi walked into the room.
He did not wear a business suit. He wore his heavy black overcoat, his boots striking the polished parquet floor with measured, rhythmic power.
Beside him walked Beatrice Harris, dressed in a clean navy wool coat, carrying an industrial steel evidence briefcase, flanked by four armed investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Organized Crime Task Force and Detective Raymond Vance of the NYPD Major Crimes Division.
Victoria jumped to her feet, her chair screeching against the floor. "Security! Remove these intruders from the floor! This is a closed executive session!"
Detective Vance stepped forward, flashing a gold federal shield. "Sit down, Mrs. Rossi. Anyone who moves from their seat will be arrested for immediate obstruction of justice."
Leo stopped at the foot of the long table. He looked down the length of the mahogany wood, locking eyes with his stepmother.
"Arthur," Leo said, addressing the company’s chief financial officer. "Read the forensic audit from Zurich."
Arthur Miller stood up from his seat, his hands shaking as he opened a certified folder bearing the red wax seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.
"Over the past twenty-four months," Miller read, his voice trembling across the silent room, "Victoria Rossi, with the direct assistance of Harrison Cole, siphoned one hundred and twelve million dollars from our maritime pension reserves into offshore accounts. Furthermore, forty million dollars was earmarked as a private contract payment to a mercenary logistics firm in New Jersey to orchestrate the sabotage of Elena Rossi’s vehicle on Route 9."
The boardroom descended into absolute, stunned chaos.
Directors jumped out of their seats, shouting in outrage, while the harbor captains stood up, their hands moving inside their jackets, glaring at Victoria with pure, lethal contempt.
Victoria backed against the panoramic glass window, her face pale as chalk, her hands trembling violently. "This is a setup! A coordinated ambush! Harrison, tell them!"
Harrison Cole didn't say a word. He sat with his head buried in his hands, staring at the table in total, unmitigated ruin.
Leo walked slowly down the center of the boardroom, stopping two feet from Victoria.
"You took my wife, Victoria," Leo whispered, his voice carrying the finality of an iron gate closing. "And you tried to suffocate my daughter in a hole in the ground. Your name is erased from this empire."
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling steel handcuffs from their tactical belts.

"Victoria Rossi, Harrison Cole," Detective Vance announced. "You are under arrest for First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Attempted Murder of a Minor, Corporate Grand Larceny, and Racketeering."
As the steel cuffs clicked around Victoria’s manicured wrists, she shrieked in wild, venomous fury, thrashing against the agents' grip as she was dragged down the center aisle of the boardroom in chains.
