Chapter 9 - The Memorial on the Sound

By mid-autumn, the rolling hills of the Long Island estate had turned brilliant shades of crimson, amber, and deep gold.
On the high granite bluff overlooking the waters of the sound, where the old stone wall had once divided the property, a beautiful open-air white marble pavilion had been constructed.
At the center of the pavilion stood a life-sized bronze sculpture of Elena Rossi, depicted in her flowing summer dress, holding a drawing compass in one hand and looking out toward the open water where the ships sailed toward the horizon.
Beside the sculpture, a polished granite plaque was set into the native stone:
ELENA ROSSI “The true strength of a house is not found in the stone of its walls, but in the truth that lives within its heart.” Dedicated in eternal love by her husband Leo & daughter Lily.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in October, a private memorial dedication was held in the quiet gardens.
Dozens of loyal dockworkers, close family friends, Dr. Sarah Vance, Detective Raymond Vance, and Beatrice Harris gathered beneath the blooming hydrangeas and ancient white oaks to pay their respects.
Lily stood at the front of the platform, wearing a soft woolen coat, holding a bouquet of fresh white jasmine—her mother’s favorite flower.
She walked forward, stepping onto the marble dais, and laid the flowers gently at the feet of her mother's statue.
"I can breathe now, Mommy," Lily whispered softly into the gentle sea breeze. "Daddy brought me home. We're safe forever."
Leo knelt beside his daughter, wrapping his massive, protective arms around her shoulders, feeling an immense, clean peace wash through every fiber of his being.
Beatrice walked up the marble steps, placing a gentle hand on Lily’s back, her eyes shining with quiet, profound joy.

"She is watching over us, Lily," Beatrice smiled softly.
"I know," Lily replied, leaning her head against her father's chest. "She was with us the whole time."
