Chapter 4 - The Storm Outside and the Silence Within

Outside in the freezing sleet, Jake pulled his jacket tight against his chest, his breath pluming into white clouds as he walked down the slick sidewalk. The bitter wind stung his face, but the cold was nothing compared to the hollow, sickening drop in his stomach.

He was out of a job. No severance, no recommendation, and no idea how he was going to explain this to his mother.

As he turned the corner onto Maple Street, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a text message from his mother asking why he was home early. Instead, the screen displayed an incoming call from an unknown, heavily encrypted number.

Frowning, Jake pressed accept and brought the phone to his ear.

"Hello?" Jake asked, shielding the mouthpiece from the howling wind.

"Is this Jake Parker?" a crisp, professional voice inquired.

"Yeah, this is Jake. Who's this?"

"My name is Arthur Sterling, general counsel for Miller-Vance Holding Group. I'm calling on direct instruction from Mr. Frank Miller."

Jake stopped walking, standing beneath the flickering orange glow of a municipal streetlamp. "Mr. Miller? You mean... the old man from the diner?"

"The very same," Arthur Sterling replied calmly. "Mr. Miller has informed me of the events that transpired at Joe’s All-Night Diner approximately fifteen minutes ago. He was deeply disturbed by the unprofessional conduct of your manager, Mr. Marcus Vance. More importantly, Mr. Miller was profoundly moved by your integrity."

Jake’s heart skipped a beat. "Look, I didn't do it for attention. I just... I couldn't watch him get humiliated."

"Integrity rarely asks for attention, Mr. Parker," Arthur said smoothly. "Now, listen very carefully. You are not out of a job. In fact, your employment status has just undergone a rather significant upgrade. Can you be at the downtown corporate plaza by nine o'clock tomorrow morning?"

"Corporate plaza?" Jake echoed, his voice shaking. "Sir, I don't even know what’s going on."

"All will be explained in due time, Jake," Arthur replied with a faint chuckle. "Dress sharp. And tell your mother she won't have to worry about medical bills ever again. Goodnight, Mr. Parker."

The line clicked dead.

Jake stood frozen on the sidewalk as the sleet continued to fall around him, staring at his phone screen in absolute, bewildered silence.
