Chapter 5 - The Morning After and the Glass Towers

At 8:45 AM the following day, the morning sun broke through the gray clouds, bathing the gleaming glass-and-steel canyons of downtown in a sharp, blinding light.

Jake stood in the towering lobby of the Miller-Vance Corporate Center—a forty-story architectural masterpiece of polished granite and black steel that dominated the city’s financial district. He wore his best interview suit—a slightly dated charcoal number that had belonged to his late uncle—and held his breath as he approached the high-security reception desk.

"Jake Parker to see Mr. Sterling," Jake said to the security guard, his voice betraying a hint of nervous tension.

The guard tapped a few keys on his terminal, looked up, and offered a polite, respectful nod. "Floor thirty-eight, Mr. Parker. Take the private executive elevator to your left. Mr. Sterling is expecting you."

The private elevator zipped upward with silent, effortless speed, the digital floor numbers climbing past twenty, thirty, thirty-five, before coming to a soft halt on thirty-eight.

When the doors slid open, Jake stepped out into a vast, sunlit penthouse office suite. The floors were covered in pale gray imported marble, the walls lined with priceless modern art, and the northern wall consisted of fifty feet of curved glass looking out over the entire metropolis.

Waiting by the reception area was Arthur Sterling, the general counsel who had called him the night before. Arthur wore an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit and smiled warmly as he extended a hand.

"Welcome, Jake. Good to finally meet you in person," Arthur greeted, shaking Jake’s hand firmly.

"Mr. Sterling," Jake managed, still trying to process his surroundings. "I... I still don't fully understand what’s happening here. Where is Mr. Miller? Is he okay?"

"Mr. Miller is right this way," Arthur gestured toward a set of heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the hall. "He’s been waiting for you."

Arthur pushed the doors open, and Jake stepped inside.

The private office was breathtaking, but it was the man sitting behind the massive, walnut executive desk that made Jake stop dead in his tracks.

Gone was the frayed, oil-stained wool coat. Gone was the stubbled white beard and the hunched, defeated posture. Frank Miller sat in a high-backed leather executive chair, dressed in a sharp, custom-tailored navy suit, his silver hair neatly combed, his slate-blue eyes bright, clear, and radiating an immense, undeniable aura of power.
