Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The sun dipped slowly below the horizon, painting the Hudson River in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and deep crimson.
The reception dinner was winding down under the warm glow of twinkling fairy lights strung through the oak trees. The string quartet had given way to soft acoustic jazz playing in the background, and the gentle evening breeze carried the sweet scent of river water and blooming jasmine.
Julian, Leo, and Mason had finally worn themselves out, falling fast asleep in a tangled, adorable heap on a oversized velvet sofa in the conservatory, exhausted from eating too much wedding cake and dancing with their father.
Gabriel and I stood together near the edge of the stone veranda, looking out over the water where the first evening stars were beginning to pierce the velvet night sky.
Gabriel slipped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder, pulling me back against his solid, protective chest.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Cross," Gabriel murmured softly against my ear.
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes as I felt the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against my spine.
"I was just thinking about five years ago," I whispered, a serene smile touching my lips. "Standing in that rainstorm on a rainy Tuesday morning, believing my life was completely over."
Gabriel tightened his grip around me, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to my neck.
"It wasn't over, Claire," he said, his voice deep, resolute, and filled with the unshakeable absolute truth of a man who had conquered his own demons to claim his true home. "It was only the prologue."
I reached up, covering his hand with mine, feeling the cold gleam of our matching wedding bands catching the starlight.

The dark empire, the corporate spies, the bitter divorces, and the secret years of hiding were all gone—swept away by the relentless tide of time and the fierce, enduring power of a love that refused to die.
As the river flowed endlessly onward into the dark, beautiful night, I knew with every fiber of my being that our story had finally found its true, unbreakable beginning.
