Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past Laid to Rest

Two months later, the federal prosecution against the remaining splinter cells of the Vane syndicate reached its definitive conclusion in a heavily fortified federal courtroom in lower Manhattan.

Arthur Vane—Serena’s father and the mastermind behind the corporate espionage campaign against Cross Freight—was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Stripped of his political influence, his wealth, and his corrupt alliances, he sat at the defense table staring blankly ahead as the gavel came down for the final time.

Serena, who had fled to London, was flagged by Interpol within weeks of her arrival and extradited back to the United States to face charges of corporate wire fraud, identity theft, and treasonous conspiracy. Her cooperation agreement shaved a few years off her sentence, but her high-society status was permanently obliterated, replaced by a prison uniform and total anonymity.

When Gabriel and I walked out of the federal courthouse into the brisk December air, the steps were crowded with reporters and camera crews flashing blinding lights.

Microphones were thrust aggressively toward us.

"Mr. Cross! Is Cross Freight merging with European logistics firms?"

"Mrs. Cross! Is it true you've returned to the estate after a five-year hiatus?"

Gabriel didn't break his stride. He wrapped his strong arm securely around my waist, pulling me tight against his side, shielding me from the chaotic press corps with the effortless authority of a king protecting his queen.

He didn't answer a single question. He simply guided me down the stone steps, opened the door of the waiting Maybach, and slid in beside me as the armored vehicle pulled away from the curb, leaving the flashing lights and ravenous reporters far behind.

As the car glided smoothly across the bridge toward Westchester, I leaned my head comfortably against Gabriel’s broad shoulder, watching the Manhattan skyline fade into the winter haze.

"Penny for your thoughts," Gabriel murmured, pressing a gentle kiss into my hair.

"I was just thinking about that charity gala six months ago," I confessed quietly. "Thinking about how close I came to walking past you, how close we came to missing each other entirely."

Gabriel tightened his grip around me, his voice dark and resolute. "We were never going to miss each other, Claire. The universe knows better than to let me lose you twice."
