Chapter 3 - The Secret Kept in Ink

The municipal archive was closing, the librarian flashing the overhead lights as a signal for patrons to depart. Helena and Clara didn't leave. Instead, they retreated to a small, secluded coffee shop three blocks away, sitting in a corner booth where the steam from two ceramic mugs rose into the chill evening air.
Little Lily sat quietly between them, coloring in a children's book with a box of crayons Clara had provided to keep her occupied.
"Evelyn didn't vanish because she wanted to abandon us," Clara said, her voice shaking as she pulled a weathered leather journal from her canvas tote bag and laid it gently on the table. "She ran because she was terrified. When she left nineteen years ago, she wasn't just escaping my grandfather's oppressive rules—she was escaping a man he had promised her to, a man twice her age with political connections who made it clear her life wasn't her own."
Helena stared at the journal, recognizing the familiar, sloping handwriting instantly. It was Evelyn's hand, preserved in ink like a fossilized heartbeat.
"My mother... she died waiting for her," Helena said, her throat tight with a lifetime of accumulated sorrow. "She thought Evelyn hated us."
"Evelyn never hated anyone," Clara insisted, turning the journal to a page dated November 1995. "She loved you fiercely, Helena. She talked about you every single day of my childhood. But she couldn't come back. Not then. Not when the men looking for her were watching every train station, every bank account, every phone line associated with the Crawford name."
Helena flipped the page, her eyes scanning the lines of text. And then, her breath caught in her throat.
“The winter is setting in heavy,” Evelyn’s neat cursive read. “The baby kicks against my ribs while the wind rattles the glass. I look at the silver brooch Helena gave me before I left, and I pray that someday, someone will tell my child the truth about where we came from—that we didn't leave out of cruelty, but out of survival.”

Helena looked up from the page, her vision blurred with tears. "A baby? Evelyn was... she was pregnant when she left?"
Clara nodded slowly, a sad, bittersweet smile touching her lips. "I am Evelyn’s daughter. Which means, Helena... I am your niece."
