Chapter 6 - The Attic Trunk

As Clara explored the room, opening drawers filled with folded cotton dresses and ribbon-tied letters, Helena walked over to the large cedar chest sitting beneath the dormer window. It was the same trunk her mother used to store winter blankets, but as Helena lifted the heavy lid, she noticed a false bottom that hadn't been there when she was a child.

"Clara," Helena called out, her fingers probing the wooden partition. "Come look at this."

Clara hurried over, kneeling beside the trunk. Together, they lifted the cedar panel, revealing a hidden compartment lined with heavy brown wrapping paper.

Inside lay a stack of legal documents, a small velvet jewelry box, and a thick ledger bound in black leather.

Helena pulled out the topmost document, unfolding the stiff parchment. Her eyes scanned the legal headings: Affidavit of Protection and Declaration of Independent Residence, 1996.

"My father didn't just reject her letters," Helena realized, her voice trembling with rising fury. "He filed legal protections to keep her hidden from the family who wanted to drag her back. He lied to us about her being an addict to cover up the fact that he had helped her secure a new identity so that powerful man couldn't find her."

Clara opened the velvet jewelry box. Inside rested a second silver brooch—the exact twin of the ivy leaf Helena wore on her lapel. Beneath it was a note written in their father’s sharp, uncompromising hand:

“Evelyn is safe in Maine. The arrangement is secure. Let the girls believe she is gone; it is the only way to keep the hounds off our doorstep. God forgive me for letting her go, but I could not watch them break her.”

The silence in the attic grew profound. The cold, unfeeling patriarch they had both feared and resented had not cast Evelyn out in cold blood; he had enacted a desperate, clandestine rescue mission, sacrificing his relationship with his younger daughter to save his eldest from a gilded cage.

"He protected her," Clara murmured, staring at the note. "In his own twisted, terrifying way... he gave her a chance to live."
