Chapter 9 - The New Beginning

Later that evening, after the crowds had dispersed and the community center had settled into a quiet, peaceful hum, Caleb walked alone through the sunlit halls of the new culinary academy.

The smell of fresh baking bread drifted from the professional-grade kitchens down the hall—a far cry from the stale grease and burnt coffee of his old job at O'Malley's.

He stopped by the large glass window overlooking the main dining hall, watching a group of young culinary students practicing their knife skills under the guidance of a master chef.

A gentle tapping of a wooden cane echoed down the hardwood floor behind him.

Caleb turned around to see Evelyn Vance walking slowly toward him, wrapped in her signature cashmere shawl, her pale blue eyes bright with intelligence and warmth.

"Working late again, Mr. Vice President?" Evelyn teased softly, stopping beside him at the window.

"Just admiring the architecture, Evelyn," Caleb smiled, leaning against the glass. "It still feels surreal. Sometimes I wake up and expect to hear Mr. Henderson screaming at me about inventory discrepancies."

Evelyn chuckled, a rich, musical sound. "Mr. Henderson is currently managing a parking garage in Gary, Indiana. I hear he’s very strict about the parking stubs."

Caleb laughed out loud. "You really have eyes everywhere, don't you?"

"When you build an empire, Caleb, you learn that information is the only currency that truly protects you," Evelyn said, her expression turning slightly more reflective. She looked out at the students in the kitchen. "But information without heart is just a pile of cold stones. You brought the heart back to this company, Caleb. And because of that, my family's legacy is finally secure."

Caleb looked at the elderly woman—the billionaire matriarch who had tested his soul with a frayed wool coat and fifty-four cents in loose change.

"You tested me, didn't you?" Caleb asked quietly. "Right from the start."

"I tested your character," Evelyn admitted without hesitation. "And you passed with honors. Now, come along. Arthur is waiting in the car, and Chloe has prepared roast chicken at your apartment. We are celebrating your promotion properly tonight."
