Chapter 3 - Sixteen Years of Ghosts

The front of the grocery store seemed to dissolve around them. The hum of the fluorescent lights faded into a distant, roaring silence as Emily stared down at the old man, her mind struggling to process the impossible words.

"Saved your life?" Emily echoed, her voice barely a whisper above the sound of the rain lashing the glass doors. "You... you knew my father?"

"Knew him?" Frank choked out, a thick, ragged sound escaping his chest as he carefully slipped the photograph back into his worn leather wallet. He slowly rose to his feet, leaning slightly against the edge of Register Three for support. "Girl, Arthur Carter wasn't just a fellow soldier. He was my brother in arms. We bled together in the dirt of a place the world forgot. And on a night when the sky fell in and everything went up in fire, he threw himself over my body to take shrapnel meant for my heart. He saved my life, Emily. And I swore an oath that if I ever made it back home, I would spend the rest of my days making sure his family was never left to starve."

Emily’s knees felt weak. She reached back, grabbing the edge of the checkout counter to keep from swaying. "My father... died when I was six. In a car accident. At least... that’s what my mother was told by the military brass."

A dark, bitter shadow crossed Frank’s weathered face. "That wasn't an accident, Emily. Not in the way they told you. When Arthur retired from active duty, he refused to sign away a classified patent he developed for military communications. Powerful men wanted it. Men in suits who didn't care about a soldier's oath. Your father went into hiding to protect you and your mother, trusting me to find you once the dust settled. But by the time I tracked your family's trail two years later, you had vanished. Your mother had moved you across three states under an assumed name, terrified of the men hunting us. For sixteen years, I’ve searched every city, every town, every forgotten archive in this country, looking for Arthur Carter’s little girl."

The revelation hung in the air like a physical weight. All her life, Emily had grown up believing her father was just an ordinary man who had been taken away by a tragic twist of fate. She had never known that her family’s entire existence was built on a foundation of shadow, protection, and sacrifice.

"Manager Vance!" a loud voice shouted from the back aisle, breaking the spell. "We need a price check on aisle seven!"

Emily blinked, snapping back to the harsh reality of her minimum-wage reality. She looked at the clock above the sliding doors: 8:10 PM. Her shift was far from over.

"Frank," Emily said, her voice dropping into an urgent, conspiratorial whisper. "My shift ends at ten. Wait for me across the street at the diner. Do not leave. We have a lot of things to talk about."

Frank Miller—the ghost who had searched for sixteen years—nodded solemnly, pulling his canvas jacket tight around his shoulders. "I'll be right there, Emily. I’m not going anywhere."
