Chapter 7 - Unlocking the Trust

With Frank safely under their roof, the practical reality of their new situation demanded immediate attention. The blind trust Arthur Carter had established before his death was legally accessible, but unlocking it required navigating a labyrinth of military red tape, corporate secrecy agreements, and federal oversight.

That was where Frank’s hidden identity came in handy.

Three days after Frank’s arrival, a sleek, black sedan pulled up outside Emily’s modest apartment building. Out stepped Marcus Vance, a high-powered corporate attorney and former military JAG officer who had served alongside Frank and Arthur decades ago.

When Marcus walked into Emily’s tiny living room and saw Frank sitting on the sofa reading Arthur’s journal, the attorney nearly dropped his briefcase.

"Miller? You crazy son of a gun," Marcus laughed in disbelief, rushing across the room to shake Frank’s hand with bone-crushing enthusiasm. "Half the Pentagon thought you were lying in an unmarked grave in the Balkans!"

"I was busy, Marcus," Frank grunted with a dry smirk. "And I’ve got work for you now."

Marcus turned his attention to Emily, offering a crisp, respectful nod. "You must be Arthur’s daughter. I’m Marcus. Your father was the finest engineer this country ever produced, and it’s an honor to finally meet you."

Over the next two hours, Marcus spread a mountain of legal documents across the coffee table. With Frank’s military clearance credentials and Arthur’s hidden ledger, the legal team was able to formally petition the federal court to dissolve the blind trust and transfer its multi-million-dollar assets directly into Emily and Margaret’s names.

"The corporate hounds who hunted your father are long retired or sitting in federal penitentiaries for white-collar fraud," Marcus assured them, signing his name to the final affidavit. "The patent your father developed has matured into a public defense trust, and the accumulated royalties are entirely yours, free and clear. You never have to worry about rent, medical bills, or grocery store shortages again."

Emily looked at the documents, then across the room at Frank, who gave her a proud, reassuring wink. The struggle that had defined her entire adult life—the constant, exhausting hustle to pay bills and keep her mother healthy—was over in the stroke of a pen.
