Chapter 2 - The Romano Ultimatum

Alessandro did not immediately take the envelope. His slate-gray eyes flicked from Mr. Bruno to Rosa, then back to the silver tray. The fragile peace he had attempted to establish in his study was instantly vaporized by the intrusion of the rival syndicate.
"Leave it," Alessandro ordered, his voice flat.
Mr. Bruno placed the tray on the edge of the walnut desk and bowed his head slightly before retreating, pulling the heavy oak doors shut behind him.
Rosa took a step back toward the shadows, her hands wringing the fabric of her apron. "If this is about me... if the Romanos are already causing trouble—"
"Quiet, Rosa," Alessandro interrupted, lifting the heavy paper envelope.
He slid his thumb beneath the wax seal bearing the insignia of the Romano family—a coiled viper resting on a dagger. He unfolded the thick parchment inside, his dark eyes scanning the handwritten lines penned in Vincent Romano’s jagged, aggressive cursive.
“Moretti, Word travels fast in this city. Rumor has it your new bride is already causing domestic earthquakes in your grand estate—screaming at maids, making scenes in the hallways. But more importantly, my sources in your shipping division report that you are distracted. A distracted Don is a vulnerable Don. Let us remind you why this marriage was brokered. It is a business arrangement, nothing more. Keep your house in order, control your women, and make sure the North Pier customs clearances are signed by Friday. If not, the truce ends, and the streets of Brooklyn will run red once more. —V. Romano”
Alessandro’s grip on the parchment tightened until the heavy paper crumpled beneath his fingers. A cold, lethal fury settled over his features—the exact expression that had terrified rivals from Manhattan to Chicago for over a decade.
Rosa watched his face change, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had lived long enough among the syndicate to recognize the look of an impending war.
"What does it say?" she whispered.
"Vincent Romano believes he can dictate the terms of my household," Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping into an octave that promised absolute destruction. "He believes that because I accepted a wedding ring to secure a truce, I have grown soft."
He tossed the crumpled letter onto the leather blotter.
"You need to hide Lily," Rosa said, panic suddenly overriding her fear. "If the Romanos know there is a child... if they find out she is yours—"
"They will not find out," Alessandro stated with absolute finality. "No one outside of this room knows the truth about Lily. Not my guards, not my accountants, not even Mr. Bruno—though he suspected as much."
"And Isabella?" Rosa’s voice shook. "She already hates us. If she discovers the child is yours, she will use it to tear your reputation apart, or worse, she will run straight to her father."
Alessandro walked back to his desk, picking up the letter and holding it over the small brass lighter he kept beside his cigars. He flicked the flame to life, watching the corner of the parchment catch fire, turning the Romano crest into curling black ash before dropping it into a metal tray.
"Isabella is my wife in name only," Alessandro said, watching the smoke drift toward the high ceiling. "She was sent here to spy, to report back to her father on our vulnerabilities. But she grossly underestimates the man she married. Tomorrow morning, I am visiting the North Pier. When I return, the rules of this house will change permanently."
"And what about us?" Rosa asked, her voice cracking slightly. "What happens to Lily and me?"
May you like
Alessandro turned his dark eyes back to her. The cold, impenetrable facade of the syndicate boss melted away for a fraction of a second, revealing the fierce, protective father beneath.
"You stay right here," he commanded softly. "From this moment on, no one in this estate touches you, and no one raises their voice to my daughter. Let Isabella scream. Let Vincent send his threats. I survived a war to build this empire, Rosa. I will not lose my family twice."
