Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Courtyard

Downstairs, the morning air was crisp and autumn-chill.

Rosa had bundled Lily in a small yellow coat, stepping out into the estate’s private inner courtyard to let the child stretch her legs near the rose garden while the kitchens were still empty of staff. The multi-acre grounds were expansive, surrounded by high stone walls and iron gates, offering an illusion of absolute safety from the outside world.

Lily crouched near a stone bench, inspecting a fallen autumn leaf with wide, fascinated eyes.

"Mommy, look! Red like a fire truck!" Lily called out, holding up the leaf.

Rosa smiled, stepping closer to her daughter. "It is very pretty, my love. But stay close to the path, okay?"

Before Rosa could take another step, the crisp click of high heels echoed sharply against the stone paving stones of the courtyard.

Isabella Romano appeared from the archway leading from the main house. She wore an immaculate cream-colored wool coat, designer sunglasses shielding her pale eyes, her blonde hair styled in a sleek ponytail.

Rosa’s heart dropped into her stomach. She instinctively stepped in front of Lily, shielding the child with her body.

"Signora Romano," Rosa said, her voice tight with caution.

Isabella stopped five feet away, looking down at them with a look of pure, unadulterated disdain, as if she were inspecting insects crawling across her kitchen floor.

"You are very brave, Rosa," Isabella said, her voice smooth and venomous. "Living in a house where you clearly do not belong. You and your little rat of a child."

"We are just doing our work, Signora," Rosa replied steadily, though her hands were shaking. "We are leaving you alone."

"Leaving me alone?" Isabella laughed, a sharp, cold sound. "You exist under my roof. Every breath that child takes in this estate is an insult to my name. Alessandro may have played the hero yesterday to appease his conscience, but he is a businessman. And businessmen eventually calculate the cost of their mistakes."

"Don Moretti knows everything," Rosa said, holding her ground.

Isabella’s sunglasses slid down the bridge of her nose as her eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "He knows nothing. Men like Alessandro care about power, not peasants. And the moment he realizes what a liability you two are to his alliance with my father, he will throw you out into the snow."

"You are welcome to try telling him," a deep, chilling voice echoed from the archway behind Isabella.

Isabella froze.

The temperature in the courtyard seemed to drop instantly.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out into the sunlight. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his jaw set in stone, his slate-gray eyes fixed entirely on his wife. He had returned early from the North Pier, and every instinct he possessed had drawn him straight to the gardens.

"Alessandro," Isabella stammered, her composure instantly fracturing as she turned around to face him. "I was merely... establishing boundaries with the domestic staff. This peasant—"

"Silence," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping into that subsonic, vibrating register that made even hardened syndicate soldiers drop their weapons.

He crossed the courtyard in three long, deliberate strides until he stood between Isabella and Rosa. He did not look at Rosa, nor did he look at Lily. His gaze remained locked on Isabella, a look so devoid of warmth that it made her step backward.

"I gave you a warning yesterday, Isabella," Alessandro said quietly, his voice dangerously close to a whisper. "I told you that Rosa and Lily are not going anywhere. Did you mistake my words for a suggestion?"

"She is a servant's child!" Isabella shrieked, losing her temper entirely as the humiliation of the past two days boiled over. "You humiliated me for them! My father will hear about this! He will tear your shipping routes apart!"

Alessandro’s eyes flashed with a sudden, lethal light.

"Your father is welcome to try," Alessandro replied, stepping closer until Isabella was forced to lean against the stone bench. "But understand this very clearly, Isabella: if you ever approach Rosa or my daughter again—if you so much as look at them with malice—I will annul this marriage before the month is out, strip your family of every shipping concession from here to Montreal, and send you back to Chicago with nothing more than the clothes on your back."

Isabella stared at him, her chest heaving, the realization dawning on her with terrifying clarity that she had completely miscalculated the man she married. He was not just playing a game of corporate alliances. He was a tyrant protecting his blood.

"You're insane," she whispered, her voice trembling. "You're throwing away a dynasty for a maid."

"I am building a real one," Alessandro corrected coldly. "Get inside. Now."

Without another word, Isabella turned and fled back toward the mansion, her heels clacking furiously against the stone.

The courtyard fell into a deep, heavy silence.

Alessandro watched her go until the glass doors clicked shut. Then, slowly, he turned around.

Rosa was standing near the path, her arms wrapped tightly around Lily, who was watching the scene with wide, uncomprehending eyes.

Alessandro walked toward them. He stopped a foot away, looking down at the little girl. Slowly, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small gold button Lily had dropped the day before.

He knelt onto the stone paving, holding out his open palm.

Lily blinked, stepped away from her mother’s skirt, and reached out. Her tiny fingers closed around the gold button, and then she looked up into Alessandro’s face and offered a small, shy smile.

Alessandro felt the armor around his heart crack just a little bit more.

He looked up at Rosa, his expression softening into an unyielding promise.

"The war has started," Alessandro murmured. "But they will never touch you."
