Chapter 6 - The Architect of Ruin

The wooden doors of the suite exploded inward.

Two men in tactical gear burst into the room, their suppressed submachine guns sweeping low. But Dominic was no longer the brooding CEO paralyzed by doubt. The realization of who Clara was had ignited an ancient, merciless fury within him.

He scooped his dropped pistol from the carpet, rolled out from beneath the conference table, and fired three double-taps before the first operative could acquire a target.

Both men dropped heavily to the floor.

Dominic rose, stepping over the bodies, his eyes completely black with murderous intent. He extended a hand down to Clara.

She stared at his outstretched palm for a single second. It was the same hand that had dragged her out of the freezing water thirteen years ago.

She took it.

He pulled her up effortlessly, catching her against his chest. For a fleeting instant, his arm locked around her waist, holding her so tightly she could feel the violent hammering of his heart against her ribs.

"Can you run?" he asked, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly cold.

"I can fight," she corrected, picking up a dropped submachine gun from the floor and racking the bolt.

Dominic looked at her—the girl he had mourned for over a decade, now standing beside him as an armed equal—and for the first time in three years, a grim, lethal smile touched his lips.

"Then let's go introduce Anthony to the real owners of this city."

They moved into the corridor. The fire alarms had finally triggered; strobes flashed white and red against the walls, and the blare of sirens drowned out the distant panic of the fleeing gala guests downstairs.

As they reached the top of the grand staircase, Anthony Mercer was waiting.

He stood in the center of the mezzanine, flanked by four heavily armed Apex contractors. In his hand, he held a sleek black tablet—the master key to Vale Consolidated’s maritime routing system.

"You really are your father's son, Dominic," Anthony shouted over the blare of the sirens. "Always ruled by sentiment. Always blind to what's right in front of you."

Dominic stepped to the railing, Clara half a step behind him, her weapon lowered but ready.

"You set the fire at Pier 41," Dominic said, his voice cutting through the noise with chilling clarity.

Anthony didn't flinch. In fact, a sickening smirk spread across his aging face. "Julian Vance was a fool. He found the missing manifests. He was going to turn over the books to the feds and destroy everything Marcus built. I did what had to be done to protect the business."

"You murdered an innocent man and tried to burn a fourteen-year-old girl alive!" Dominic roared, taking a step down the stairs.

The guards raised their weapons, training red laser dots on Dominic’s chest.

"And she survived, didn't she?" Anthony chuckled, looking past Dominic toward Clara. "I must admit, Clara... or should I say, little Clara Vance? You played a magnificent game. Three years right under his nose. I almost didn't realize who you were until I saw your father’s handwriting in the margins of those audit files you stole from my desk."

Clara’s grip tightened on the submachine gun. "My father was twice the man you will ever be, Mercer."

"Your father died screaming in the dark," Anthony spat. He looked back at Dominic. "It's over, Dominic. The transfer is complete. The Volkovs have full operational control of the southern ports. In ten minutes, the Chicago police will arrive to find Vale Consolidated’s disgraced CEO dead after a murder-suicide with his rogue assistant. A tragic end to a tragic family."

Anthony gestured with two fingers. "Kill them."

Before the guards could pull their triggers, the hotel’s power grid shut down.
