Chapter 8 - The Shadow Audit

The safehouse this time was Dominic’s private sanctuary—a restored clocktower loft overlooking the rail yards on the city's south side, known to no one, not even Anthony.

For thirty-six hours, the loft became a tactical command center.

Monitors illuminated the exposed brick walls, displaying endless waterfalls of financial transactions, maritime manifests, and intercepted communications. Miller stood guard at the street level, while Dominic and Clara worked side-by-side at a scarred pine worktable.

The dynamic between them had shifted irrevocably.

The corporate hierarchy was dead. The distance Dominic had enforced for three years had vanished, replaced by an intimacy so raw it felt electric. Whenever Clara leaned across the table to point at an IP address, Dominic’s eyes lingered on the line of her throat, on the bandage covering her shoulder, on the quiet determination in her profile.

He brought her coffee without being asked—Earl Grey with a single cube of sugar, exactly as she liked it. When she didn't look up, he gently set the mug beside her hand.

Clara glanced at the mug, then up at him.

"You remembered," she said quietly.

"I never forgot," Dominic replied, his voice rough. "I pretended not to notice. I thought if I kept you at a distance, you wouldn't become a target. I convinced myself that being cold was the only way to protect you."

Clara looked down at the tea, steam rising between them. "You almost got us both killed, Dominic."

"I know." He didn't offer excuses. He stood before her, stripped of his corporate arrogance, his soul laid bare. "If you leave after this is over, I won't stop you. I will give you whatever you need—money, security, a new identity anywhere in the world. But until Anthony is finished, let me stand in front of you."

Clara stared at him for a long moment, seeing the boy who had pulled her from the fire thirteen years ago living inside the man who would tear down the world to keep her safe today.

"I don't need you to stand in front of me, Dominic," she said softly, reaching out and brushing her fingers over his knuckles. "I need you to stand beside me."

Dominic swallowed hard, his fingers curling around hers, holding on as if she were the only anchor in a storm.

"Found it," she said, looking back at the main screen.

Dominic leaned over her shoulder, his chest pressing lightly against her back. "The terminal?"

"Pier 41," Clara said, her voice dropping into a lethal chill. "Anthony isn't using the Drake contracts to run cargo through the north pier. He lured the Volkovs to the exact warehouse where my father died. They're moving fifty million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds and stolen weapons through Pier 41 tonight at 3:00 AM."

Dominic’s eyes darkened. "He went back to the scene of the crime."

"Because he thinks it's a blind spot," Clara said, clicking through satellite overlays. "The old dock was rebuilt as a federal impound facility. Anthony’s private security has exclusive jurisdiction over the perimeter. He thinks no one can monitor him there."

"He's wrong," Dominic said, reaching for his tactical jacket hanging from the chair. "I still hold the master maritime override codes my father gave me before he died. Anthony never knew they existed."

Clara stood up, checking the magazine of her pistol. "He has twenty men down there, Dominic. The Volkovs will have twice that."

Dominic looked at her, his eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, terrifying certainty.

"Then they're going to need more body bags."
