Chapter 5 - The Safehouse and the Secret

The industrial safehouse smelled of old coffee, gunpowder, and cedar. It was vastly different from the gleaming glass penthouse; rows of computer monitors lined one wall, casting a blue glow over the room, while a battered leather couch sat in the corner.

Pickles had been released from his carrier and was currently investigating a stack of encrypted hard drives with supreme feline indifference.

Hannah was sitting on the edge of a steel desk, clutching a fresh cup of black coffee that Evan had grudgingly handed her. Her adrenaline had finally crashed, leaving her limbs feeling like lead.

"So," Hannah said, blowing on her coffee. "Kearney has my apartment. He has my office. My landlord thinks I’m a runaway jewel thief because Evan left my front door kicked off its hinges. My life is officially rubble."

Dante walked over, setting a thick leather-bound ledger on the desk beside her. It was worn, its edges frayed, bearing handwritten notes in Arthur’s neat, meticulous accountant cursive.

"Your life isn't rubble, Hannah. It's just... paused," Dante said quietly. He leaned against the desk, looking down at her. "And as for your apartment—we've already arranged for a security detail to move your things into a safe location. Once this is over, you'll be set up anywhere you want. Paris, London, Tahiti."

Hannah looked up at him, her brown eyes flashing with sudden defiance. "I don't want to run to Tahiti, Mr. Vance. I like my apartment. I like my boring little life, my discount grocery store, and my routine. And more importantly—Victor Kearney murdered my boss. The man who taught me how to balance a ledger without crying."

Dante’s expression darkened. "Kearney is a monster. He built his empire on blood, extortion, and laundering money through legitimate real estate fronts. Arthur tried to stop him legally. It got him killed."

"Then we don't stop legally," Hannah said, surprising even herself.

Dante blinked, caught off guard. "Excuse me?"

"You have the data. I have the brain that understands how to trace every single hidden penny of Kearney's fortune," Hannah said, tapping the ledger. "If we freeze his assets globally, publicly expose his laundering network, and hand the evidence to the federal task force that’s been trying to nail him for a decade... Kearney won't have an empire left to protect."

Evan, who was monitoring the security feeds across the room, let out a low whistle. "Boss, the accountant has teeth."

Dante stared at Hannah for a long moment, a profound sense of respect—and something much more dangerous—burning in his slate-gray eyes. He reached out, covering her small, trembling hand with his large, warm one.

"It's a suicide mission, Hannah," Dante warned softly. "If Kearney catches us before we upload this data to the feds, he won't just kill us. He'll make it slow."

"Then we make sure he doesn't catch us," Hannah said, her hand turning over to clasp his fingers back. Her skin tingled where they touched. "Besides, you're a terrifying mafia boss, right? Act like it."

A deep, genuine laugh rumbled in Dante’s chest. "Alright, Miss Brooks. Let's go take down an empire."
