Chapter 6 - Poisoned Chalice

The center of the ballroom opened for us. In society circles, dancing at the Benefactor's Gala was an official declaration of alliance, status, and intent.

Richard pulled me into his arms. One of his large hands settled firmly against the small of my bare back, pulling me flush against his chest, while his other hand clasped mine tightly. His grip was strong, commanding, guiding my movements effortlessly across the polished parquet floor.

The rest of the world dissolved. The whispering socialites, Victoria’s furious glare, the flashing cameras—all of it faded into a blur of light and shadow.

There was only Richard.

"You were magnificent back there," I whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. My heart was pounding so hard I was certain he could feel it against his chest.

"You held your ground before I even said a word," he murmured, his gaze tracing the arch of my eyebrows, the curve of my cheek. "Arthur taught you well. You didn't flinch."

"I had you standing beside me," I admitted, resting my cheek for a fleeting second against his lapel, breathing in the scent of him. "It's easy to be brave when you know a dragon has your back."

Richard chuckled, the deep vibration rumbling through his ribcage. "A dragon? Is that what I am to you?"

"A dragon," I smiled softly, looking back up at him. "Fierce, terrifying to everyone else... but remarkably gentle with his treasure."

Richard’s step slowed slightly. The playful amusement in his eyes vanished, replaced by an intensity so profound it made my breath catch.

"You have no idea how precious you are to me, Daphne," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I spent years telling myself that keeping my distance was an act of honor. But watching you suffer this week made me realize that honor is useless if it leaves you unguarded. I will never let anyone make you feel small again."

Before I could reply, the music swelled, carrying us through a dramatic turn. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to forget the corporate war, the lawsuits, and the ghosts of my past. In Richard’s arms, I felt safer than I had since the day my father died.

The dance ended to a polite roar of applause from the surrounding crowd.

Richard pressed a soft kiss against my knuckles before releasing me. "Wait here for a moment. Marcus just signaled from the terrace; the DA's office has an update on Tristan's preliminary hearing."

"Go," I said, offering a reassuring smile. "I'll get some fresh air by the garden alcove."

Richard hesitated, his protective instinct flaring. "Stay within sight of the security team."

"I will," I promised.

He disappeared toward the terrace doors, his tall frame slicing easily through the crowd.

I walked toward the quieter edge of the ballroom, near a set of French doors leading into a dimly lit glass conservatory filled with orchids and ferns. The cool air coming off the glass was a welcome relief against my flushed skin.

"Quite a performance, Daphne."

I spun around.

Standing in the shadows of the conservatory entrance was a man I hadn't seen in nearly two years: Julian Sterling, Victoria's older brother and the reclusive head of the Sterling syndicate. Unlike Victoria, Julian was quiet, calculating, and far more dangerous.

"Julian," I said coldly, keeping my distance. "I believe your sister is currently having a panic attack near the bar. You should go comfort her."

Julian smiled thinly, stepping out of the shadows. He held a glass of dark liquor, his posture relaxed, but his eyes cold as flint.

"Victoria is impulsive," Julian said, taking a slow sip. "She let Tristan manipulate her into believing Richard could be caught off guard. I knew better. Richard Langum doesn't make mistakes."

"Then you should know better than to approach me," I replied, taking a step backward toward the crowded ballroom.

"I'm not here to threaten you, Daphne," Julian said smoothly, reaching into his breast pocket and pulling out a small, sealed digital recording device. "I'm here to offer you a trade."

I frowned. "What trade?"

"Tristan was an amateur," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper. "He thought he was being clever by tampering with Arthur's alert system. But Tristan didn't act alone that night."

My heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"

"Tristan didn't have the technical clearance to bypass Vance Holdings' secondary firewalls," Julian said, tapping the recorder against his palm. "Someone gave him the master encryption key. Someone inside Arthur's closest circle."

"You're lying," I said, though a cold dread began pooling in my stomach. "Richard already investigated the digital footprint. Tristan worked alone."

"Did he?" Julian’s smile widened, sharp and cruel. "Or did Richard only show you what he wanted you to see? Think about it, Daphne. Who benefited the most from Arthur's sudden passing? Who ended up with control over your voting shares, your company, and now... your hand in marriage?"

"Stop it," I whispered, my voice shaking. "Richard loved my father."

"Richard loved *power*," Julian corrected, taking another step closer, holding out the recorder. "On this device is an encrypted audio log from Arthur's private study, recorded forty minutes before the paramedics arrived. Arthur wasn't just arguing with Tristan. He was on the phone with someone else. Someone he accused of orchestrating his downfall."

Julian placed the small device on a marble pedestal beside a blooming white orchid.

"Listen to it," Julian murmured. "And ask yourself: are you marrying your father's protector... or the man who cleared the board so he could have you all to himself?"

With a mocking nod, Julian turned and vanished into the shadows of the conservatory.

I stood frozen.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. The digital recorder sat on the marble stand, a small, blinking red light pulsing like an evil heartbeat in the dim light.

*It's a lie,* my mind screamed. *It's another trap. The Sterlings are trying to divide us.*

Yet, a dark, insidious seed of doubt had been planted. Tristan’s words echoed back to me from the night of my birthday: *“Everyone knows what’s going on between you and Richard Langum.”* And my father’s own words in the letter: *“I built an empire... but I invited wolves to our doorstep.”*

May you like

With trembling fingers, I reached out and picked up the recorder.
